I ripped a ton of DVD's from my local library (and my school library) all thanks to the taxpayers' dollars. Thank you everyone! I didn't have to pay for any of them!

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. My library does stuff like that with the moveis. No videogame stuff though.

Of course to be fair my library system is extremely well funded and regarded as one of the top 10 in the nation... so for me it's more of a

"Well they already have the other stuff covered" type thing.

Good ole Cuyahoga County Libraries.

Also our computers are bound to desks.  So those who are looking up porn... well people see you doing it.

Also i do borrow movies from my local libraries.  Often because honestly they have movies i've never even seen or heard of, and you'd never find in any of the rental shops by me.

One of the Libraries by me has a great selection of subtitled foreign movies.  Anything from smart ones and ones about WW2 to ones about a guy during fuedal japan who is exceuted for being a Christian, but then makes a deal with the devil to attack Japan with an army of zombies.

Though i mean... if the Library didn't rank so high in terms of having actual books i'd be pissed about it.

I think this would have been great when I was a kid.

And if you're worried that the kids won't be learning....at least they're going to the library....where they can't help but be introduced to the literary culture.

This is the point of why libraries are doing this.  People want this service and they greatly appreciate it.  Everytime I would go into the library over the summer, the place would be jumping with activity.  I was legitimately surprised how many people came to the library on such a regular basis.  And a lot of people who were checking out movies were checking out books too.

Why should a library simply exist, use taxpayer money, and provide no services that people actually want?  Obviously, they shouldn't do everything people would like them to do, but I think it is great the libraries are expanding the services they offer.  Would you rather we paid for libraries but barely anyone got an actual use out of them?  That seems even more wasteful to me.

It sounds awsome, but you're right. Librarys should be for learning, not renting mindless movie or games.

Videogames could be adapted as a cultural artform.  I don't see it happening as of yet though.  Games lauded for having great stories.... MGS4, God of War etc. would have trouble being optioned for production as a sunday afternoon TV show.

The only story i've seen that would come close honestly as far as a game goes is Killer 7.  Which was a lot like Twin Peaks... probably because that was Suda 51's main inspiration for the game.

Your title is highly offensive and your stance seems egotistical in my view. Libraries are about culture and archives I think anything they do to expand interest and awareness is great and necessary(though the gaming is pushing it).

Glad this thread had nothing to do with Obama/McCain.
Libraries realize that if no one goes, the Gov will stop supporting.

People who love the library/don't want to lose their jobs are abandoning Benjamin Franklins original ideology and are allowing non educational media into the library. I would be for it, but it runs counter to my political philosophy that "when it comes to doing it yourself (earning money and buiyng/renting a movie) or having the governement do it for you (earning money, having it taxed away, and then going to borrow a movie from the library) its better to do it yourself.

Both ideologies are valid and open to debate, and I think the whole media in library thing is more about ideology and conflict of interest than Americans being idiots.
