Forums - Gaming Discussion - What do written video game reviews or video game review scores mean to you?

I just read them for someone else's opinion on the game... which really doesn't influence my game purchasings.

So everyone here that posted said that...if you for example never knew about a game and it gets high praise reviews..you would play it?

I mainly look at the written words, as it's hard to put amount of enjoyment into a number.

Besides, some people like different things. For example, when I was a kid, Simon's Quest was one of the best games ever made, and to this day, I still think it is, even if some regard it as being one of the worst games on the NES (thanks in part to the AVGN).

We'll miss you George.

Understandable, Torillian...So if it was a game that you really liked, but it got awful written review....9 times out of 10 would you still pick up the game?

yes....because 9 times out of 10 I already know most everything about the game by keeping up with news and updates on it.  And I can'tjust completely skip what may be a game I truly enjoy because of the opinion of others, I still have to give it a shot.  I may be more apprehensive, but I will certainly still buy it.

Really the only time where reviews make a difference for what I buy or not is when I'm on the fence for a game and it's a pretty unknown quantity.  An example would be Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm.  I like the demo and the concept, but I'm not totally sold yet and reading reviews will help me make a final decision.

So basically if your unsure about a game, you listen to a review. If you like it then you don't listen reviews..understandable. Thats how I am but I just listen to previews and watch gameplay videos. And if I like what I see then yea.

I want to be the one to find faults in the game, not someone else's opinion. Because those faults that reviewer explained might be something I can play through.

If it's from a genre I like, and the good reviews come from sites I trust (like RPGFan), probably yes. On the other hand, I don't care how many 10s an FPS gets, I won't even get close

60 dollars wasted or not.

The trick is to find a site whose review scores for existing games are something you can agree with 90% of times(for me its gamerevolution). Even though they gave MP3 and Twilight Princess lower scores than i believe they deserved, their overall reviewing system still works for me. Of course reviews become unimportant if youre excited enough about a game to buy it in the first week of release

Reviews can be incredibly useful for discovering games that you never had your eye on in the first place, that turned out to be true gems. That's how I found out about and subsequently bought Persona 3

...

It is impossible to base every game's quality on personal gaming experience because that would mean that you would have to buy every game. Firstly who has that kind of money to buy every game and second that is a huge waste of cash anyway. I listen to the actual reviews more then the score. If the written/video is actually in favor of the game with minor flaws and I have set interest in it already, I will buy it. From there I will decide if it is good or not.

I mean if a food critic tells you that he got food poisoning from a restaurant you don't go a see for your self now do you? You must weigh both the public's opinion of a game and your own impression of it, that way you can be a smart consumer like me lol. :)
