Forums - Sony Discussion - Rumor: PS2 for $99 will feature Waggle Controller

Upon reading the newest EGM issue, I came across a rather interesting rumor in the Quatermann section called Rumor Mill:  "OK, the Wii is winning the console war right now -- no need to argue that one.  But Sony may have a sneaky plan up its sleeve.  I'm hearing it will repackage the Playstation 2 to compete with Nintendo by including a Woo Remote-like waggle wand for $99 this holiday season.  Now let's just hope they don't call it 'Pii.'"

Yes, they would be copying Nintendo.  However, this would be genius.  Considering the Wii is about as powerful as an Xbox, and the previous generation was dominated by the PS2 despite the Xbox being more powerful, if you take away the only thing the Wii does better you have a real advantage.

Obviously, the disadvantage is that all Wiis have a wiimote already.  However, at $99 the PS2 would have a far better library (the best in history of gaming...arguably?...if you so choose) and a much better price point for new Waggle users.

Also, you could just show how cheap the tech is and sell it for cheaper than Wiimote (and the upcoming Gun for Time Crisis).

This would effectively pit the PS2 against the Wii for the rest of the generation, and continue to spur Wii ports to the PS2, such as Rayman Raving Rabbids.  The extremely high install base could easily buy a new controller for these games.

If this is true, in my opinion, sony has just gave up on PS3. Why would they focus on the last generation otherwise?

Well, it would position the PS3 solely against the 360 while the PS2 would uphold the fight against the Wii for last-generation graphics.

No, the new controller is basicly going to make the ps2 compete with the 360, I mean motion controlls like the wii while playing GOW would be awsome, they are goin to make a new motion controller but black and a lil bit more comfy than the dual shock, they want it to compete with the wii and kill there sales since they dont considerit nexgen, they are trying to take out the 360 with the ps3, but the new controller will likely be playable with the ps3 hopefully.

Does it really hurt THAT bad to have your precious Wii insulted? Seriously this a Sony forum what do you expect.

PS2 would compete with the wii
PS3 would compete with the 360

PS2 with waggle kill Ps3, are you honestly so ignorant ?

"This would be genius."

Sony would admit that waggle is the way to go and the PS3 would be instantly dead if they keep the PS2 alive with such a peripheral.

"The PS2 would have a far better library."

How so? All these games weren't made with waggle in mind.

"The extremely high install base could easily buy a new controller for these games."

But why would they? The Wii will have more and better games with waggle support.

First of all, Sony had the Eye Toy before, and now has Sixaxis. They are not shying away from motion control. Your target there is Microsoft.

The rest of PS2's library does not suddenly go away. Not all games need waggle. I am saying the $99 PS2 would be very tempting for a lot of people because of the library as well as the new controller.

A lot of games are already on the Wii and PS2 (and PSP for that matter). Games would merely require a controller option for future ports.

Edit:  Again, I say it would be a geinus move.  It would marginalize the Wii's advantage.

i smell bollocks. first off all they'd have to either map the controls of ALL of their old games to support the motion feature. while they could do that it wouldn't be true motion controls just a set of predestined moves mapped to the controller.  if it was an easy thing for them to do. i highly believe that NINTENDO WOULD'VE DONE IT ALREADY FOR ITS VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAMES AND BACKLOG OF GAMECUBE GAMES.

so whilst they may bring in the controller that would mean that they would have to develop new games to take advantage of the feature. you wouldn't be able to just put in live 07 and viola it works!

nice try egm. it was funny maybe for a nano second.
