Forums - Sales Discussion - 10 Most Expensive Video Game Budgets Ever

How is it possible that GTA4 cost that much to make? What the hell did they put in that game?

Have you played GTA4? They have recreated a freaking city with thousands of buildings, hundreds of cars and countless things to do. Besides I think the 100m include advertisement.

I think no game beats world of warcraft, that game was in development 5 years b4 release, and after 3 years, it is still  fixing bugs, updating and delivering new expansion. I don't know the exact, but it is surely higher than any of these game cited.

Just like everyone else, I'm very skeptical of the reported budget for Too Human. However, if it's true, then Too Human will completely obliterate Silicon Knights the same way Hellgate: London sank Flagship Studios. In any case, Dyack should probably have released Too Human on the PSX or the GameCube...

How did GTA IV cost that much great game but not 100 mil worth

PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.

Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game

Hey they sold 10,2 mln copies at 59,90, , it gives you 600 mln of revenue, even if take out the distribution cost, the media costs and sony , money, they made a profit, plus: it´s still selling 60,000 copies a week.

600 million at retail is like 300-350 million to the publisher (yes, retail takes that much), which then loses about another 100 million to licensing if its not Sony/MS/Nintendo, and another 50-100 million to manufacture and ship those 10 million units... so that leaves 100-150 million left over.  GTA probably has a better ratio with the retailers than a typical game (i.e. it costs them more per unit to purchase from the publisher), because of its status as a franchise.

Still, any game which covers its dev costs in as short of time as GTA4 did, especially considering the colossal cost of GTA4 to develop, has done pretty well.

1. Grand Theft Auto IV, $100,000,000

2. Shenmue, $70,000,000

3. Too Human, $80-$100,000,000

4. Metal Gear Solid 4, $50-$70,000,000

5. Halo 3, $60,000,000 (for some reason he includes advertisement costs in the budget)

6. APB MMO, $50,000,000

7. Tom Clancy MMO, $50,000,000

8. Killzone 2, $40,000,000

9. Final Fantasy XII, $40,000,000

10. Final Fantasy IX, $40,000,000

Your Mendicate bias is showing.

They probably included advertising in all of them, or else GTA IV would be considerably higher considering the amount of adverts it got.

The reason why GTA IV is so high, or a reason why is all of the licensed soundtracks, actors and the like.  To actually have Katt Williams, and some other comedy guy lend their voice and likenesses to the game along with tons of other actors lending their voices, and artists and songs and whatnot couldn't have been cheap.

Also, if KZ2 is really that low, I don't worry so much about the game bombing.
