It will sell lots of copies but fail to improve hardware sales?

It will boost PS3 hardware sales much more than it would boost X360 hardware sales. FF XIII on PS3 should outsell the X360 FF XIII by 2 to 1 in favour of PS3. PS3 should also outsell the X360 by around 2 to 1 every week when this game is launched.

In Japan PS3 will outsell X360 in excess of 10 to 1 in favour of PS3.

I hope so, since the 360 only manages to sell 2-3k most weeks and won't even have FFXIII in Japan. So that's not saying much.

I still don't see it being any more of a hardware mover than GTAIV. Any gains will be modest and short lived, just like GTAIV and other similar games that cater to a specific audience many of which already have consoles.

QFT, though I'm not sure how FFXIII will do, I'm 100% positive it won't sell as many copies or have the perfect 10's that were paid for, in the long run it may be a better game then GTAIV but may not sell as well as past FF games as the console install base is not as big as it was other gens, plus it may not cater to the 360/PS3 crowd as well as the PS2/PS1 crowd in the past.

Final Fantasy is the only major JRPG series in America (at least where installments will sell over 1 million copies). Final Fantasy isn't really that "niche" I would say as most times it manages to sell over 2 million copies. However, Final Fantasy just isn't as big as the Grand Theft Auto series. Ever since Grand Theft Auto III, those games have commonly sold over 6 million copies in the US alone. A Grand Theft Auto game can sell more copies in the United States than a Final Fantasy game can sell worldwide. When Final Fantasy X sold nearly 8 million copies worldwide. Grand Theft Auto Vice City sold OVER 8 million copies in the United States alone.

Even if Final Fantasy XIII gets just as much hype as Grand Theft Auto IV (which is very unlikely) it won't sell more copies or even come close to selling as many copies, even across two systems.

As much as I like VGChartz, I must be honest. I'm not too interested in the community. Most (I'd say a good 70% of the people here) are too caught up in the fanboyism and politics of gaming, and are mostly just people waiting to ravenously insult another user on the forums. I tried participating in the forums but rather than discuss it seems most of you would rather tear other people down. Why is it necessary to insult everyone who thinks differently than you? Also, not everything here is a fanboy conspiracy. I see the word fanboy here than I do on most forums out there. I'm sorry, I don't want to be a part of a community that's so negative towards everyone all the time. I'd rather go to a place where the people of a forum are more willing to discuss and step away from personal attacks any time someone disagrees with them. I just can't take it anymore.

So I ask, respectfully, that you don't add me. I'll more than likely respond to respectful messages but don't count on me being on the forums too much and don't count on me accepting your friend request.

Took the words right out of my mouth.  FF used to be a much more mainstream game in America before GTA and Halo came around.  The video game market was quite a bit smaller back then too.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

I doubt the two will be similair. I don't even think we can compare them as their audiences and premisses are totally different. I'll try and brake it down:

Acclaim: We know how GTA4 fared. Most reviewers typed up their review a few hours into the game and gave it stellar reviews whilst a few weeks later most people consider it a disappointment. FF will be the other way around. FF isn't instant gratification so it will still get high scores, but also a couple of lower ones that will take down the average simply because some reviewers won't get into it. It has a huge chance though to be a lot more memorable in the long rung over GTA4.

Sales: GTA4 will easily surpass this. GTA has a lot more main-stream attention then FF. The only way I see FF crawling out of the shadow of the (smaller) PS fanbase - and the non-existent Xbox fanbase is by marketing it to the public and show the similarities to, for instance pokemon.

This site/webforums: Nothing changes. The JRPG fans will shoot their wads all over it, whilst the rest just pull up their shoulders. The forum will then descent into a lot of bickering about what's great and what sucks about FF13.
I expect at least 1/3d of the "games" forum section to contain FF related threads on the first page.

It'd been better to compare this one to MGS4.

 LOL, so true.

one thing that would b similar to GTA4 is, FF13 will not move any of the consoles' sales significantly in NA and Europe. but obviously it will sells loads of ps3 in japan

It's pretty safe to say that FF13 will be popular with people who've liked the previous parts in the series, ignored by people who didn't, have an average score in the mid-90s, and sell around 80% of what the previous part did. The only thing that might change is sales being slightly stronger than those of FF12 (first of a series on a console etc), but that's about it.

The mixed response to GTA4 comes not from people saying the game isn't any good (it definitely is), but outrage at the ridiculous amount of perfect and near-perfect scores, even though it's still far from a perfect game. I don't see Square-Enix putting up a similar circus, so the reviews should be much more reasonable.

gta4 is a over hyped piece of shit. No FF game has ever or will ever see the hype that, that game got, serious man.

as for the reviews you about right, mid 90's.

as for the dissapointment i will agree with you on that.

because FF has always been a niche game that is for JRPG fans. Many people have never played a JRPG and FFXIII is going to be the first one they play. JRPG games are an acquired taste and i think many people are going to buy into this game just because of it being one of the bigger franchises this gen. expecting the games to be something it is not.

So the reason above re why i think many people are going to be disappointed with this game.

Final Fantasy niche? Those two things don't belong together in a sentence.......unless it's "Final Fantasy is one of the few JRPG's that is not niche."

Edit: Damn........beaten by a minute!

Along with DQ and Pokemon. FF series is one of only three main stream popular selling JRPG series. All the other JRPG series are niche games that appeal to the JRPG nuts of the gaming world.

FF do get tramendous sales, when i see niche i mean only people that like jrpg's and all that will really like the game and not be disaponted. its like games like mgs are niche but sell millions of coppies. what i mean is only people that like those saught of games are going to really like it.

people who dont buy jrpg's are going to buy ff because of it being one of the most hyped games around. many of these people will be dissapointed with the game as they are not used t jrpg's.
