Shadow of the Colossus was a piece of art. It did something different, and succeeded. However, I wouldn't call it a masterpiece. When it comes to gameplay, it wasn't top of the bill to me.

If I could name 2 masterpieces, I would say Super Mario World and Zelda Ocarina of Time. Timeless classics with flawless gameplay.

There are a lot of great games that come to mind. As far as masterpieces, I'd say Shadow of the Collosus comes close, and Braid is definitely a work of art. I'm sure there are others, but those two are probably the only ones I would call works of art.

There are more than 2 gaming masterpieces and those are not part of those.

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

The most interesting part of the article is that it appears he's interested in working on video games. Apparently Hellboy was also a horrible game, so knowing he was involved in that isn't encouraging. Of course, movie tie-ins are invariably horrible games, but I'd like to see what he'd do on what I'd think a more appropriate type of game would be for someone who's primarily a movie person (adventure/RPG).

It's nice to know that over 25 years of consoles have been kind enough to give us all of two masterpieces...

I havent played ICO, but if I were to name one game that is a materpiece in terms of art, and is a wonderful experience, it would be Shadow of the Colossus.

Masterpiece... what am I supposed to make out of that? From my opinion, lots of great games are masterpieces, but the greatest masterpieces I've ever played are Ocarina of Time, because it's gameplay is revolutionary and the gameplay is just flawless.
Half-Life 2 is another game I would like to honour here, as it has an awesome atmosphere and amazing shooter gameplay that's some of the best ever, the fps crème de la crème.
Then Super Mario Galaxy, because I can simply find nothing about this game that's not perfect. If there's one game that Miyamoto made that's able to surpass OoT in greatness, it's Super Mario Galaxy.
Then comes Metroid Prime, because, well... it's Metroid Prime. MP has a way of storytelling that's simply impossible in movies, and exploring Tallon IV is one of those things that every gamer has to do at least once in a lifetime.
Last but not least: Bioshock! Read my Half-Life 2 description to see what makes this game so uber awesome, but add in nifty RPG-elements, tons of different playing styles, and an amazing art-deco graphics direction. It's classic.

Other games that could make it up there, but that I haven't played yet are Shadow of the Colossus, ICO and Metal Gear Solid 4.

Ha, my thoughts exactly.

Guillermo is the man, but the suggestion that awesome gaming didn't actually start until the PS2 came out is pretty silly.

He's talking 'games as art' that he's played.  Out of all the games I've played those two (and maybe Silent Hill 2) are the only ones that would spring to mind - and I started playing games when you had to go to an Arcade never mind a home console!

Zelda. Metroid, Half Life etc. are all great games but I wouldn't consider them art.  ICO and SOTC I would.  I guess I'm not alone in that although others might disagree.

I think elements of other games (Deus Ex & Half Life 2 spring to mind) come close but few games carry off their themes as well as ICO and SOTC (and Silent Hill 2 - got to keep mentioning that).

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
