Forums - Nintendo Discussion - When will the Wii get a price drop?

Snesboy said:
This Christmas. Wii consoles are becoming more readily available. Just the other day I saw like 10 at Walmart.

Xbox 360 is seeing a price cut to $200 (I believe the Arcade bundle or something) and Nintendo will have to compete. Why buy a Wii when the 360 is 50 dollars cheaper?

I expect the Wii's price to be cut to $199.95 this Christmas.

Ask Europe, they seem to have no problem paying more for Wiis than 360s.  Or just ask the people in NA who pay above retail and have therefore been paying more than the 360 Core price for Wiis for some time now.

Wiis are the lowest in price but value is the important consideration.  For many the Wii is still worth more than the 360 and therefore it will not drop in sales.  It's foolish to even think the Wii would drop in demand closer to the holidays.

I would say possibly christmas 2009 or 2010 as then is when supply may start going above demand. If it doesn't though then it will most likely be a good few years away. All depends on sales though.

There's also a possibility of price drop from only the price that Nintendo sells consoles to retailers, while the list price (sold to consumer) stays the same.
Someone might ask why would they do so, and it would be to get retailers to promote the Wii more. They would also expand to new stores, when retailers would see a new gap for profit. Basically this could equal a pricedrop, since retailers would make their own cuts and bundles.

But as for an official pricecut for consumer price, it's really hard to say and depends on Nintendos strategy how they decide to fight for the market share and how high they are willing to up the production.

Iwata has said that pricecut isn't expected before 2012, but i'd say it happens when Wii is manufactured more than 3,5M a month, which should be 2010 at latest.

WOW dude said 2012? That's a little on the optimistic side, aint it? He's basically saying they expect the Wii to sell for 3 more years, until 2011, then finally hit a snag and would require a price cut in 2012.

It's so ridiculous, it's been like 2 years since the Wii came out and you still cant see one in stores, at least in SoCal where I live. Buuuut, to say it'd keep selling so well  for the next 3 years, I just don't see it happening. EVENTUALLY people are gonna get sick of Wii Sports and Wii Fit, at least I hope.

I'd say sometime in 2010.

Well you have to consider, that Nintendo does not make a price drop if the Wii does not sell "good" anymore. It does it, if the sales of the Wii are considerable higher than production.

I don't think they would lower production.

And my guess is, that will be next year. The masses Nintendo is stockpiling right now should be enough for Christmas. And after this one, my guess is demand will go down at the current price point. So the time for a bundle in the first country should be March/April (Wii Sport Resort is one option, Galaxy is a other option.

If the 360 is cheaper than it. I say maybe Summer '09.  But u must take into accout Ninty does NOT want to lower it.  They want it to be a cash cow.  If the price is lowered they will likely make only 20+ bucks off it while now they are making around $86 I think.  Of course the yen vs $ must also be taken into consideration.

Probably for a good 2 years or three or until the demand starts to drop a lot.

When they can actually stay on a shelf for 24 hours would be the starter. I picked mine up for my kids on Christmas last month.

PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.

Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game

Well it wont be determined by the competition 360 in UK is at this same price (Arcade) and Wii still sells incredibly. They will eventually get a price cut i think around 2010, or if demand gets down around Christmas 2009. Nintendo as someone said before will go for Coloured Wii's before that, and some other selling techniques.

I think sometime in 2010, but this is very hard to predict, because it depends on whether or not Nintendo can add more value with new software. Games like Wii Fit and Mario Kart have managed to keep demand up to the point of sell-outs in North America for many months...who's to say that there won't be more games like that over the next several months?

When do you think DS will get a price drop?

Don't forget that Nintendo doesn't do price drops if it doesn't have to. DS supply has been mostly consistent, but it only had one small price drop very early on when it was selling poorly. Unless Nintendo vastly overestimates demand all at once, it can leave Wii at this price for a long time.

is the OP looking for flames?..

honestly...NEVER

why? because it sells like crazy..the instant it will stop selling like crazy the price might drop..MIGHT

but...in all honesty...I don't see it dropping..neither does nintendo..neither does malstrom...so I feel fine

if you only see Sony and MS dropping prices..and you're jealous at Nintenod making so much money..

and just want to FORCE people to say it HAS to drop...sorry..

it will NOT happen..NEVER...it will either DIE or be disrupted again..but never drop price...sorry
