Forums - Gaming Discussion - How many people know the 360 is more powerful than the Ps3?

i agree with most of what the people say here.

i will say that the ps3 cpu is better than the 360 cpu, but the 360 has a better gpu and more RAM.

so as of right now 360 games look around the same or a little better than ps3 games but i think in another year or 2 ps3 games will look better because of the sheer power of the cell.

As has happened in the past, but even more so this time, these two systems will differentiate themselves by their software, not their hardware.

I think it will be both, the SPEs are truly something. BTW they all have access to super ultra fast dedicated local memory units and in addition to this the GPU and CPU don't only have access to the video RAM, but also to the ultra fast XDR memory which operates at 3.2 Ghz. You could compare this to Amigas nearly doubling in overall performance when upgraded with fastram, as the lowend models only came supplied with a much slower shared graphics/CPU memory model by default. Combine this with the sheer storage capacity of Blu-Ray for streaming high quality textures and 7.1 audio, I think we will soon see PS3 games differentiate themselves from XBox 360 games in terms of game complexity and performance.

IMO it's quite remarkable that many ported XBox 360 games perform so well without their game engines even tapping into the power of the SPEs (some early PS3-only games like the visually pretty Genji 2 did't use them neither), which provide by far the bulk of the PS3's performance potential.

PS3 vs 360 sales

This has always fascinated me. Sony spout out every time they opened there mouths, but there was a large group of techies who pulled apart the specs and came up with this analysis:

 http://dpad.gotfrag.com/portal/story/35372/?spage=1

Make sure to read every page. If you're too lazy, the article goes on to prove that the 200 gigaflops of processing power at 100% efficiency Sony say the Ps3 can pull is BS. During testing, a maximum of 75% efficiency was achieved, which severly limits the numbers. Then they announced on 6 of 8 spu's are for gaming, so thats another 25% reduction in power. Real figures end up being closer to 80 gigaflops. Furthermore the 360 uses less system ram for the OS, reads information faster from a disk than the ps3 does with blu-ray and the graphics chip in the 360 makes the Ps3's graphics chip look like a voodoo2 by comparison. The whole article is an excellent read for anyone interested in the truth about the power figures. Feel free to spread the link around a few other forums, get the word out to stop the lies from Sony. A $100 price cut is nothing if there is a more powerful console which is cheaper with better online gaming and more games to play. Wii60 FTW!

ROTFLMFAO!! trully priceless! *wipes laughter tears from eyes* VGC forums at their finest. Still ROTFL

The PS3's Cell processor is able to achieve well over 200 GFlops performance, tests indicate the SPEs can reach near 100% efficiency in matrix multiplies. The PS3's CPU performance is over 3 times of what can be achieved with the XBox 360 CPU. The Cell can read/write 25GB/s, EIB bandwidth of 307.2 GB/s.

I thought you were referring to online games. Anyway check the PS3 lineup for the fall.

actually i was referring to online gaming...online gaming to me (and to the vast majority of gamers) is basically FPS (mostly)and then RTS, RPG and racing games and so far PS3 line-up in those categories isn't comparable to X360's.

My question is: will Sony set up a comparable line-up in time for this holiday season? free online gaming if you can't offer interesting games is quite a pointless feature, isn't it?

FPS: Resistance, best version of Rainbow Six Vegas (includes $20 of DLC), The Darkness, Double Agent, and Call of Duty 3, all for free online.

Racing Games: Motorstorm and RR7 are both lag-free 12 player online for free.

Advanced Warfighter 2 is coming soon as well. This fall will include Haze (exclusive to PS3 this year), Unreal Tournament 3, and Orange Box ( Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal, and Team Fortress 2).

Just found this on Wikipedia: "In an interview with Gamasutra, Tim Sweeney revealed that the Playstation 3 version of UT3 will support user mods, created on PCs and downloadable to the console.[11]

Keyboard and mouse controls will also be supported for the PS3 version via the USB ports on the front of the console, as well as motion-senstive operability for aiming via the SIXAXIS controller's motion-sensing capabilities.[12]" That's huge.

The 360 had a year head start but the PS3 is quickly catching up.

The real question is what system is currently selling more world wide? ps3 or 360?Ps3 is just now starting to sell more consoles than 360 in europe.

Oh, and the guy that started this thread is probably paid by M$.  That article came out before the PS3 did.

"How many people know...?"  No one, because it's not true.

Hearing this argument reminds me of the Saturn/Playstation arguments of the mid 90s ...

It never really mattered whether the Saturn was more powerful or not, it was such a nightmare to develop for that no one was ever able to do that much with it; at the same time the reason the saturn was received so poorly was that it was too expensive for anyone to ever consider purchasing.

Without even looking at the technical side of things, so far I have been *much* more impressed (graphically) with 360 games than PS3 games.

Part of this is because the incredible hype that Sony built up over the console. I had a general expectation for it to blow the 360 away, and if anything - it has been the other way around.

Now obviously, the 360 has been out for longer - so tools, optimisation and coding techniques are more mature on the 360.

But until this changes (and PS3 games start looking significantly better than 360 games) I (and most other gamers out there) will continue to undervalue the PS3.

(Why spend more on something that is not as good?)

...

I commented on this 6 months ago, and nothing has changed. This Xmas is absolutely vital to the console wars this generation - primarily for this reason.

There is no 360 game that blows away a ps3 game (graphicly) atleast that I know of.
