Do your research just about EVERY major game system these days puts a certain amount of memory next to the GPU,* EVEN the PS3 (the 256MB of VRAM on the RSX). So they ALREADY know how to get around that little hurdle. For example, the unified RAM of the Xbox and 360, and the VRAM of the PS3, are all variants of DDR RAM. The extra clock cycle most certainly gets around having to go through the GPU.
*The original Xbox didn't have its RAM next to the GPU, but the CPU still had to go through the GPU to get to the RAM.
This does not mean either system is more powerful, it just means this isn't proof the PS3 is.
