Each hour racks up the production bill high very quickly for HD games.

Nah man, they could easily rack up hours by making you grind on the same respawning mobs to get past a boss, like in Dragonquests. It has nothing to do with how much it costs. Giving meaningless filler tasks is free.

Dragon Quest was grinding outside the entrance of the first town for 4 hours just to venture out a little closer to the first cave.

@Soriku

IU definitely has more texture detailing than ToV.  ToV is definitely one of the best looking cel-shaded games I've seen.  The way the character models perfectly blend to the backgrounds is amazing.  Closest to playing an Anime so far.

EDIT:  1000th POST YEAH!!!

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Conservatives:  Pushing for a small enough government to be a guest in your living room, or even better - your uterus.

Vagrant story was my favorite game on the PS1. I love that game so much.  Any comparsion at all to IU will make this a day 1 buy for me :D

I haven't played it, lol, that's not a certain thing. Don't blame me if it's bad, lol. However, if you know how to buy and sell on ebay, a day 1 can't hurt anything, as you can make up at least 50 dollars of your purchase price by selling the game if you don't like it.

@FinalEvangelion

You've played it I see, lol, then you understand. There are a lot of ways to increase the playtime for your game without having to spend more money, for instance, just making the boss stats really high.

That's why this play time seems like a conscious decision, to me. The could tout it at 35 hours if they wanted to, but they chose to keep it slim.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Haha, yeah.  I've been cautiously optomistic about the game so far.  I'll be reading reviews and hand-on before deciding but if comparisons like that start coming out then it'll peak my interest just that much more.

20 hrs?

What if this is Square-Enix's new direction with JRPGs, meaning less grinding and more focus on pacing and story!? What if FFXIII is only 25-30 hours!? D:

Studies are showing that people just aren't beating games like Okami, Twilight Princess, and FFXII. Shortening those games to 20 hours could be a way to pack it into a sleeker package, with a lot of the filler cut off, that was required with older games. You see a lot of complaints that "I can't play those types of games anymore." This could be a move by Square to make jRPGs a hardly-core gamer experience once more.

Is it good or bad? Well, I doubt it will decrease sales, and in all likelyhood, it could make your game get better reviews from most sources, especially those that feel the genre needs a change.

So, there really is no way the company would tout 20 hours without a reason. Is it just this game, or could a trend emerge?

That's sad, deprives people who can maintain interest of enjoyment.
A Galaxy like method could be good, finish it quick if you wish or keep playing for maximum experience.
I find my attention can wander, but can finish those longer games... Even with how long I take

flames_of - "I think you're confusing Bush with Chuck Norris."

 Wii: 80-85 Million end of 2009 (1.1.09)

The SNES rpg's were storage-limited, that's why cd-based jrpg's took off in size and scope when discs became the norm. Now with skyrocketing development costs, something's gotta give, and it looks like content is the winner (aka loser).

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

That is traditionally what side quests are for, they enable the more dedicated players to spend many more hours playing the game.

That is unless of course American developers start using cel-shading regularily in their games.

ff is always large,
including sidequest i can go over 100 hours.

and story is always around 30-50 hours.

Final Fantasy is the exception because they are multimillion sellers

FFIV and VI can be beaten in about 30 hours, and you can do most of the sidequests, if you know where to go.
