Forums - Sales Discussion - NPD, GfK, Media Create collaborate on global sales figures

Don't know if this has been posted yet but just found this news item:

"The NPD Group, GfK Chart-Track Limited and Enterbrain, Inc., today announced the release of Top Global Markets Report which collates software sales data from the US, UK and Japan.

The report shows that GTA IV has sold 6.3 million copies in US and UK closely followed by Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl which has sold a total of 5.4 million units across all three territories.

To break it down: GTA IV has sold 4,711,000 units in the US and 1,582,000 in the UK whereas Brawl has sold 3,539,000 units in the US, 213,000 in the UK and 1,681,000 in Japan.

From the release:

“The leading games information sources in the U.S, U.K. and Japan – the largest games markets in the world – have joined forces to provide the gaming industry with a single source for sales data providing detailed insight into what’s happening in these important markets.”

“The video games business has become increasingly global, with the majority of the publishers releasing games in multiple markets,” said Anita Frazier, industry analyst, The NPD Group. “The U.S, as the world’s largest market will be able to view and compare sales for the first time outside of their own market.”

Pretty interesting that these company's will work together to release global sales figures. Strange though that GTAIV is listed at 6,3 million while VGChartz has it over 10 million. Or are these numbers from a while back or something?

You aint found shit!

That is just US + UK, VGC is ww

6.3 mil for US and UK only. No EU numbers where GTA sells mega numbers

Funny to see that they consider US + UK + Japan to be the world.

Even more funny that Europe is the place where the most revenue is generated yet we are apparently not part of this world...

"collates software sales data from the US, UK and Japan."

I wonder why Gfk isn't including the numbers for all the countries they collect data for. But then again, they only acquired Charttrack recently, so they might not actually be involved in this deal.

but i think it is a good beginning... maybe more countries will be added later on if the partnership yields good result for them...

Wonder if VG forced them into this...

Next they will be starting a "public" website, with databases tracking sales of all the games

Well... there are not that much people living in canada, around 30million But to cut off 250 million people in Europe and still call it worldwide is strange. I mean, GfK is a German company that is not tracking the German market. weird

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...
