Forums - Sales Discussion - The PS3 isn't doing as bad as N64 did to PS1 when you think about it

Yeah it isn't........

From some gamers' perspective, it's not doing as bad simply because the PS3 has lost many titles as exclusives, but they are still being released on it....unlike the N64, which completely lost 3rd party support altogether.

In this case, well, despite being in 3rd place, it still has the support of most 3rd parties, something the N64 didn't.

Well my penis has made me more money on the internet than the PS3 or 360 have made for Sony or Microsoft. It'll be a while before it becomes as profitable as the Wii for Nintendo though.

Another way to look at the performance of a console is to see how well it performed in comparsion to the previous console released by the company.

Using hardware shipment figures the N64 shipped 66% as many units as the SNES, what do you suppose the odds of the PS3 shipping 66% as many units as the PS2?

The Nintendo 64 selling as bad as it did is one of the biggest tragedies in gaming.

You would be hard-pressed to find a system with as many A+ games as the Nintendo 64.

But it sold like crap. And this, combined with the crappy sales of the Game Cube, has resulted in Nintendo changing their direction for the worse with the Wii.

*sniff sniff* this post is filled with opinions that might not reflect what the market feels. I actually like the direction they took with the Wii.

Haha, for the worse? The Wii has better graphics, better controls, better 3rd party support, better sports games, a better Mario platformer, a better Zelda, ONLINE, and better casual-centric games than the N64 or GC.

The improvement in hardware, interface, and software lineup have led to greater sales, you silly goose.

But not if compared to the other plataforms. While n64 greatest weakeness was the cartridge choice, the wii has a perception to the public as a worse plataform. It maybe very powerful, but that´s the perception. There a two powerful reasons to wii success, the mistique around the new joystick and the price, as it´s the cheaper console. In my humble opinion, the price is the main reason, as 299 is very cheap for a new gen console.
If for any reason, the ps3 price droped and nintedo didn´t act in the same direction, they would be selling similar numbers.

Wii was selling for a profit from day one and still sells at that same price. The PS3 was selling for a huge loss at launch and has had many large price cuts in under two years. How is it you figure that Sony is going to be able to put any price pressure on Nintendo in the next three years?

There is no price cut either of the HD consoles could make that Nintendo couldn't match; their units cost less to manufacture on day one, and will have benefited from much greater economies of scale. The reason Nintendo hasn't participated in the price cut derby up until now is that they have been selling Wiis as fast as they can make them.

Now this isn't saying that Nintendo won't match price cuts as the cost of the other consoles gets closer (see Xbox), but I can guarentee you if wiis start selling slower and Nintendo determines its a price issue, there will be a price cut on the Wii that the HD consoles couldn't possibly match.
