I could care less if the N64 did worse than the PS3, even though it didn't. It made profit and had a library with excellent quality.

But hey, anything (and I mean) anything can be brought out the woodwork to make Nintendo look bad nowadays.

You're right.  They weren't knocked down to a distant second like the 64.  They're at a distant third trying to claw their way back to 2nd at best, after the most successful home console of all time.

There are a few ways at comparing these two, and it doesn't look like the PS3 is doing much better than the N64.

Marketshare:
At this point in time, the PS3 slightly edges out the N64.  Nothing significant though, the PS3 will likely still end up within 5% of the N64's share (~22%).

Profitability:
The N64 made nice profits, as Nintendo always does, while the PS3 has eaten up at least 3 billion.  Sure, it helped win the HD format war, but we have yet to see how that will pay off.

Compared to predecessor:
The N64 sold about 2/3 of what the SNES did (drop from 49mil to 33mil).  To pull off a similar number, the PS3 will need to move 90-100 million, and I don't see that happening.

By comparison, Nintendo shipped 34m NES in the Americas alone. 61.91 NES consoles shipped worldwide.

As mentioned, Saturn outsold N64 in Japan. As for the others, none of them really ended up competing, so I guess we can let those go, but this thread still fails pretty badly.

Super Famicom/Mega Drive/PC Engine would be a better gen to compare this one to. Nintendo/Sega/NEC all show that it's not a zero end game. More than one console can be successful at once, especially as the market gets larger each gen.

At the end of this gen PS3 should still end up as the fourth highest selling home console of all time, and 360 should be right up there too.

Ps3 is already selling more than x360 yearly, so it will finish at 2nd at least. And in the profit subject, you have to see how is going to turn out the blu ray novel. If bluray is such a big success as the dvd, then they just got an edge with the ps3. but they should sacrifice one of them either the ps3 prices or the blu discs, as they are still too expensive, both of them.

3DO is weird..... released between 2 generations.... or is that the jaguar? I forget.
