Forums - Gaming Discussion - The PS3 is not being advertised as a hard-core gaming system. Good or Bad?

People think Sony should advertise the PS3 as hard-core and promote more of their violent games like the XBOX since that's the only thing that sells millions for HD gaming.

Do you think that's true?

If you noticed, littlebigplanet will be the official mascot for the PS3 once it releases, and it wouldn't surprise me if it will become bundled with the 80GB PS3 to replace MGS4 bundle and possibly a 50 price cut just for the release.

It looks like the PS3 is combining both HD and casual into their console, the casual audience that Nintendo has, and HD that the 360 has and putting it together to sell to both audiences so i think it's good that it's not just targeting hard-core gamers since they obviously peak faster than casual gamers.

Nintendo isn't targeting casual gamers. If that's what Sony thinks they're doing, and is mimicing that, maybe that is why they're failing so hard.

It will be very hard for Sony and Microsoft to capture a significant portion of new gamers (or casual), since the Wii is the standard accepted system for these people. Word of mouth travels quickly. This doesn't mean they shouldn't try, of course. They should have a wide variety of games and wide-appealing advertisement.

The Wii is the PS2 of this generation, and more than that (it also attracts formerly PC-only gamers quite a lot in my experience).

 Excuse me ?

90% of Nintendo commercials in the US feature people aged over 35 or kids, if that's not targeting casuals, I'm not sure what is :p

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

It is like the PS2 and it isn't.

2-3 years in the PS2 life there were few medium-high budget games developed by third parties that didn't release on the PS2 ( big exception i can think of is RE4). So there are some differences between last gen and this gen...

Aside from Nintendo first parties and some third parties games GC owners last gen didn't get that many games.

So far 360 and PS3 owners can't really complain they aren't getting good games, and this holyday's lineup guarantee it's going to stay this way for at least 6 more months...

Non-Gamers sir. Nintendo is bringing non-gamers into the fold of gaming. Specifically I do believe one of Nintendo's main goals with the DS and the Wii was to make it more appealing to women, since that was a very large hole waiting to be filled for years.

Sure, there are some differences, but they'll become increasingly more irrelevant as the gen goes on. I was referring more to the casual side.

@Onxymeth: LOL, I hope that was on purpose.

Maybe. BTW Sony is focused on profits and will not drop the PS3 price. A LBP bundle I could see though.

@Ail:
1. Who are the casuals?
2. Kids are the very core audience of the industry.
3. Nintendo plans to target everyone. And the more avid gamers knows even without commercials what the Wii is.
4. I guess Sony isn't targeting the commercials in the same fashion and is it working?

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.
