the only thing that stops me from buying ati cards is that they have poor driver support. or has that changed

its a toss-up but really nVidia is a bit better due to Linux driver support.

Didn't ATI/AMD recently open up the drivers?  Maybe I'm imagining a bit here.  Haven't really paid attention as I haven't been shopping for a video card recently.

It seems the mods need help with this forum.  I have zero tolerance for trolling, platform criticism (Rule 4), and poster bad-mouthing (Rule 3.4) and you will be reported.

its two 4870s on one PCB... why woouldnt it have 2GBs?

reference 4870 is 512MB.  does a 1GB 4870 exist?

But yea 2GB of video memory is excessive.  Most games and resolution are totally fine with 512MB today.

crappy old school NES games are more entertaining than next-gen games.

Wait till Nvision at the end of this month, maybe something will be announced.

I will still ALWAYS use Intel and Nvidia, had bad issues with Ati in the past.

Yes, they did. AMD's binary Linux drivers are at least parallel to Nvidia's now, and the AMD-sponsored open-source drivers (which Nvidia say they're not interested in ever doing) are progressing well, with enough 3D support to run most Linux games well. If you want absolute current performance, Nvidia is still faster, but if you are looking for the next 2-3 years or more then the improved binary drivers and new open-source ones will be better.

yay fo ATI.

My next card is going to be 4850. It's cheap, so i can easily change it in the future.

If you have to ask, you can't afford it.

JK, its about $600 USD IIRC. But its likely to come down in price quickly.

Wooo ATI's headquarters is in Canada, that makes them Canadian right?

They were. But like most successful Canadian companies, they got bought out by the States. In fact it was almost exactly when AMD took them over that they fell off the video card throne.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

i love ati, because their crap works better on macs....despite me fiying a card or two by overclocking them... stupid nvida and crappy drivers

@stof if i remember right durring the x8oo line (wich was not supposed to be a next gen card) atis troubles started, because their true replacement for the 9800line (r350 chipset?) ran into major problems and had to be shelved for a few years, and it latter came out as the x1600 (r4xx chipset).

its been awhile since i looked that up but there should be a good summer on the wikipedia, amd bought them just after all of those problems, but the graphics cards didnt suffer due to the set back till a year latter, now they are back on track in r&D

also have you been fallowing the major board problems nvida aparently has with its 8xxxx/9xxx line pretty bad stuff failure rates of over 40%
