Forums - Gaming Discussion - E3 2007 - Most important ever?

Get rid of the hype the others had in the past, and you were left with only a few special E3s... the ones that mainly introduced new hardware. Sure, those will alwys be exciting, but it was always the E3s (And CES before that) in between that showed off the goods.

So, I think I'm not alone in saying, that this E3 may very well help determine the future of these three companies for at least the next 5 years.

I know this wont be like te E3 of the past, and I do not know the overall format, but here are some ideas.

NINTENDO

If Nintendo does not show anything new, and keeps the Big 3 there only real trump cards wihout the glimmering hope for new software = bad move. They have their foot on the throat of the industry, they need to step down now and squash any notion of the 360 or PS3 gaining momentum against them over the lifetime of the console.

If say, the 360 or PS3 drops the price, they should drop their price. A definitive kick in the jewels. Anything to keep the lead. If the PS3 and Xbox360 drop huge exclusives,Nintendo should steal them away, or get versions of them. Do what it takes in order to keep that foot firmly pressed down. They could very well guarantee who wins this generation with this show. A bad show would be a disaster. A boring show would be just as bad. They knocked it out of the park last year. It would be nice to see a repeat.

SONY

Hate to say it, but they need to flood their system with games, and now is the time to stop showing videos. Show them playable in all their PS3 glory even if they aren't ready. Do not announce a price decrease until November.Make no mention of it. Keep the illusion that you are invincible, but show your cards. You must show several games that the 360 and Wii do not have! 3 games in 2008 will not cut it! There are still 6 months left of 2007!

 MS

Price cut. Destroy. Sony will have to match (if not right away... eventually) Microsoft is actually in a good spot to knock the PS3 back some more. HD nuts aside, the games almost look the same. Feed off that belief

Get rid of Online Fees. It will help in the long run.

Show more then Halo 3, and GTA IV, or there won't be many reasons to want an Xbox 360 after that.

any thoughts?

I think the media winner here will dominate xmas 2007

Predictions For Last Full Week of Sales in 2010)

WII - 80.35 Million

360 - 43.88 Million

PS3 - 41.40 Million

More terrible predictions coming Jan. 2011!!!

Nintendo has absolutely no reason to drop their price anytime soon, regardless of Sony and MS's price moves. None at all. Relent and allow playable demos of MP3, SBB, and Galaxy on the floor, along with Wii Health and Wii Music. Give us a glimpse of the 2008 tentpole releases.

MS should abolish their online fees, agreed. Aside from that - Halo, Halo, Halo.

Sony - pray to God, the Buddha, and every one of your ancestors that MGS4 and FFXIII say exclusive at least through to 2009. Playable KillZone - put up or shut up (not really Sony specifically, but it would be a huge shot in the arm).

I like some of the points you made, the only thing i strongly disagree on is:

"If say, the 360 or PS3 drops the price, [Nintendo] should drop their price."

I really don't think it necessary for the Wii to drop in price, because it already has an affordable cost attached to it, even if PS3 and 360 drop theirs

Edit: Desroko beat me to it :(

This is definitely not the most important E3 ever; it's unlikely to have anywhere near as large of an impact as last year. Don't forget, E3 2006 gave us the first glimpse of Wii mania and "Five Hundred Ninety-Nine US Dollars", both of which were unexpected. You could make a reasonable argument that the 7th generation of console wars was largely decided by the decisions made at last year's E3. This year will still be important, but I don't see how it can equal the annoucements from last year.

As Desroko and tabsina stated, Nintendo will not cut the price of the Wii; the thing is still hard to find, so there's no need for a price cut to boost sales. Microsoft is more likely to annouce a price cut than Sony, but it's possible for either of them, although that would mean driving their operations even further into the red. (I'd encourage more console fans to think in terms of profit rather than market share; price cuts that gain market share are hardly the panacea that many believe them to be. Selling more units means little if you end up having to lose money to do so!) Saying stuff like this:

Thrillhouse said: Get rid of Online Fees. It will help in the long run.

Sounds great from the perspective of the end-user, but is terrible from Microsoft's point of view. They ARE planning on making a profit at some point in time, right? This kind of business plan will land them right back in the position of the original XBox: selling lots of units, but bleeding out money from the ears to do so.

We'll see what happens. "Winning" E3 is often overrated; only very devoted fans actually follow what goes on. It's a major event, certainly; I just think that the sales trends for this holiday season are pretty set in stone already, regardless of what goes on at E3. It is fair to say this: Microsoft and (especially) Sony have a much greater need for a good showing than Nintendo.

My Website

End of 2008 totals: Wii 42m, 360 24m, PS3 18.5m (made Jan. 4, 2008)

This E3 is a huge event for Sony.  Sony need it to work for them.

Ideally they need the big games in playable demo's of:

Killzone 2
MGS4
Haze
Ratchet & Clank

Along with others like:

Lair, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted, Eight Days, Time Crisis 4 and Home

And a few self playing demo's of GTAIV, FF XIII and GT5 would help.

On the PSP front, they need all the big games of 2007/early 2008 there as well, with playable demo's of:

God of War: Chains of Olympus
Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow
Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice
Castlevania Dracula X
Silent Hill Origins

Prediction (June 12th 2017)

Permanent pricedrop for both PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro in October.

PS4 Slim $249 (October 2017)

PS4 Pro $349 (October 2017)

I think that E3 will be important but much more for Sony and Microsoft.

Nintendo

Ask your mom what she thought about last years E3, better yet ask the people in the retirement homes, or even your girlfriend who loves your Wii lol. I bet they will all ask you "what is E3"? Most of the casual gamers don't even know what E3 is enough to care about it. Though if Nintendo wants to grab some more "Hardcore gamers" then they still need a good show but they don't have to be the best because most of there money is coming from the "non-gamer gamers".

Microsoft and Sony

Microsoft and Sony are going after the more devoted gaming crowd, those people will be concerned about E3. And for that reason alone they both need to leave Nintendo in the dust with their shows.

Sony

Sony needs games, games, and more games. Nothing more, nothing less. Also they need a very good showing of their exclusives.

Microsoft

Get rid of those damn online fees(won't happen) and have Halo playable.

I don't think Microsfot will cut the price of the 360 before Sony does for the PS3. But If Sony does, Microsoft will probably follow suit pretty fast.

E3 2007 is going to be a huge event for Sony and Microsoft.

I think Sony may have the edge on Microsoft, as far as games go, but can they sucessfully showcase them? It remains to be seen.

Nintendo is far from dropping the price, at least no now, maybe they will show playable demos of Mario Galaxy, which would be a high boost.

There's also a lot to say about if third parties would be there, because they will decide most of the future, a main saga FF for the Wii would be a kick in the jewels, and it doesn't seem so unlikely as Square has done pretty good with their games for the DS.
Nintendo also needs a boost from the third party hard core games, let's hope for a wii Version of MGS, at least Snake is already in the Wii.

Sony needs to surprise, as easy as that, they need something no one is going to wait for, an announcement, a game, something, because they need to get momentum.

And XBOX, well, they also need something aside form Halo, because if you notice, they are not doing quite well either.

Took the words right out of my keyboard.

I'd say E3's have generally been overrated - seemed to me that Nintendo was declared the "winner" at a majority of these shows, but it never seemed to help much. Until last year. Likely because it was coupled with Sony demonstrating how to stick one's head up one's ass.

I don't think it matters much for Nintendo as a whole as to what they show at E3, but I don't expect them to go without some interesting new stuff to show. A hard drive is likely as well.

Sony's released list of games is disappointing to me, as nothing was new. Hopefully they are keeping a secret or something though. We'll probably see a PSP redesign but I have no interest in replacing my original.

I don't think Xbox 360 has anything major to show. I think their fans will be the most disappointed with this E3.
