So what is the problem exact? This is what I got on the news:

=> Georgia send troops to South Ossetia to hunt down some Seperatists.

A lot of those Seperatists are Russians....=> Russia invades that province...

?

russias been gearing up for this for a while.  they just want control of georgia again.  so whatever excuse they want to use doesnt really matter.

No Mr. Bubbles, the UN.

The question is whether the UN can achieve an end to hostilities diplomatically and then scrounge up the peacekeepers to hold the peace.

the U.S. wouldn't have anything to do with this one militarily. Not just because they don't have the resources, but because they're not going to enter a war against Russia.

The UN can't do anything though.

Russia is a permanent member of the security council... and could just veto any resolution put up against itself.

@ Konnichiwa - Alright - Georgia has three provinces which claim autonomy. One of these provinces is South Ossetia. Georgia is seeking to align itself with the West and Nato.

South Ossetia, which is run independently by an internationally unrecognized government, is aligned with Russia. Russia has given Russian passports to South Ossetian citizens and keeps Russian troops there which it claims are peacekeepers.

Late last night violence broke out in the seperatist region between Georgian forces and the South Ossetian separatists, with the amount of Russian involvement and support in that initial conflict unknown, but Russia quickly ramped up the conflict with arial bombing and forces entering South Ossetia from across the Russian border.

The big questions now is whether Russia will escalate and include the entirety of Georgia in it's campaign, and whether other autonomous provinces within Georgia will come to South Ossetia's aide or seize upon the conflict to further their own independence goals.

seeing as the UN cant do anything without the US.....

totaly untrue

actually.. its pretty much true. This is why the US is the home base of the UN.

Yeah... problem is... the UN can't do anything without Russia either.

The UN can't do anything without France, China, Russia, UK and the USA.

Which is why the UN sucks. Anyone who could get away with anything without full UN support... is part of the government of the UN and can make sure the full UN doesn't unite against them.

At best the UN will adopt a few "resolutions" that russia are free to ignore because they won't even be mandatory ones.

NATO on the otherhand MAY threaten russia behind the scenes with economic sanctions or other similar things to get them to pull out and put UN Peacekeepers in.

I realize the UN has many faults. You may recall they attempted a complete overhaul a year or two ago? It was going to dramatically revamp the U.N and make it a more effective body? But then at the last minute the U.S. ambassador John Bolton derailed it with a gigantic list of amendments designed to weaken it?

But anyways, This conflict risks completely collapsing Georgia as a nation. If that happens, yes, I think an agreement can be met to see neutral forces in the region. Even Russia would agree to that depending on the circumstances.

I'm just now starting to absorb information about this, I was watching the Olympics opening ceremony before...

I'm very curious and worried about what the role of NATO will be... Georgia was promised they'd become a member of NATO.

Very serious and very worrying.

Eh,  at worst they'll insist russia stop at the South... and then will instantly bring the rest of Georgia in the fold.

Kind of what the EU is doing with Serbia.  Give up Kosovo relativly quietly with just the needed amount of outrage to keep support... and we'll let you in.

And the news networks right now?

Covering John McCain, a bus crash and some criminal who refused a visit from his brother.

Nice.
