While The Physical Confrontation Calms, The Virtual Assault Continues

NEW YORK - Attacks by Russian hackers against Georgian Web sites, including one hosted in the United States, continued Tuesday even as Russian President Dmitri Medvedev ordered a halt to hostilities against Georgia.

Tom Burling, acting chief executive of Atlanta-based Web-hosting firm Tulip Systems Inc., said the Web site of the president of Georgia was the target of a flood of traffic from Russia aiming to overwhelm the site. Burling said bogus traffic outnumbered legitimate traffic 5000 to 1 at http://president.gov.ge">president.gov.ge.

"Literally, our people aren't getting any sleep," Burling said.

Tulip's firewall was blocking most of the malicious traffic. The site has been periodically inaccessible, though it was working midday Tuesday. Burling said the attacks have been reported to the FBI.

The site was transferred from servers in Georgia, the small nation south of Russia, on Saturday. Georgian-born Nino Doijashvili, Tulip's chief executive and founder, happened to be in the country on vacation when fighting broke out Thursday. Doijashvili offered help to the government when it became apparent that Russian hackers were getting the upper hand, shutting down several government and news sites.

The U.S.-based Shadowserver Foundation, which tracks Internet attacks, said they had noticed commands to attack Georgian sites being issued over the weekend to "botnets," or networks of computers that have been surreptitiously subverted by hackers. The computers are used to send bogus traffic to targeted sites, slowing them or in some cases bringing them down.

The same botnets are also targeting Russian news sites and the Web site of Gary Kasparov, the Russian chess player and political activist, according to Steven Adair at Shadowserver.

On Monday, hackers took over the Web site of Georgia's parliament and replaced it with an image that drew parallels between Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili and Adolf Hitler, Adair said.

really? Cause as bad as Bush messed everything up... at least he didn't destroy democracy in the US.

Saying Bush is worse then Putin is honestly ridiculious.

Bush will be gone soon.  While Putin in his Chronies will have control of ruissa for years to come... because nobody will get a fair vote.

Not sure how accurate this is, but according to a guy on NeoGAF:

Currently Russian news is reporting that the naval vessel that was shot down was probably Ukranian made. There's also a bunch of other reports suggesting Georgia is using all kinds of Ukranian made weapons/anti aircraft/tanks. In an interview, a Russian soldier said that he's sure some Ukranians were actually operating tanks. There's also the possibility that Ukraine will try to deny reentry for Russian vessels that have currently been deployed.

Putin gave a speech as well. He's not at all pleased with the way USA responded. Comparing Georgia to Iraq and how Russia's involvement in Georgia is much more justified than US invading Iraq. Said that a lot of what he's seeing out of US is a "cold war mentality".

Russia did confirm that they're now advancing from the other side of Georgia but are meeting less resistance there.

Making up reasons to head into Ukraine?

Yes, Moscow has its eyes on Ukraine. Moscow may want to overthrow President Saakashvili, but this war is about sending a message to Ukraine. Moscow wants to maintain its hegemony over the Post-Soviet states, and it views Ukraine as the most important state to maintain control over. Ukraine is quite advanced in regards to missile technology, it is a top-ten steel producing state, and most of Russia's natural gas is supplied through Ukranian supply lines. Moscow has interfered in Ukranian politics recently (Putin endorsed PM Yanukovych in the 04 presidential elections), and it will do anything to maintain its hegemony.

You know, most of the people who post here are American (about 50%)... You only see one side of the media... CNN and all the other American and European news-sites only show the suffering from the Democratic republic of Georgia! Not trying to offend anyone here, but everything has two sides. In this conflict it is 1) Georgia provoked Russia by using their military power to regain control over South-Osettia and 2) Russia was waiting for such a military action by Georgia to give them a reason to invade the country, which ofcourse takes it too far!

I just wanted to let people know; we too get biased media, although 95% of the people reckon that's not true... You only hear about the Russians being so evil, but the Georgians have played their part too! And so have the Americans with their rocket-shield.

Oh: And Bush can keep saying that the rocket-shield is in no way aimed at Russia. But can someone care to explain why they wanted to place it in Latvia then, when they say they want it to be aimed at Iran?!... I don't get it... Latvia and Iran are halfway on the other side of the world practically... (Oh, and Latvia was second choice, if Poland would not accept the deal, which it now hasn't).

Georgia attacked the South Ossetians because the South Ossetians attacked them first... on Russia's behest.

It's the age of the internet.  It's easy to get news from more then just the country you live in... and it's easy to see who is telling the truth.

The thing about the US media is... it's biased... but it doesn't have an agenda other then "Lets make money."

This story hasn't really gotten enough coverage to even have a spin put to it in the US media.  Most of this storys coverage has been "how will it effect the election."

Bush maybe an idiot but Putin is an authoritarian ruler that only pretends to be a democrat, that man controls media, exterminates people in chechenya and deals with the opposition. Former KGB Colonel made sure that his buddies from FSB (Old KGB and NKWD) are the true masters of russia now (they dealt with people like Chodorkowsky or Abramovich), and current president is only his puppet.

Facts are Russia was never a democracy, in fact russians dont even like democracy in their whole history they have been strong under an iron fist, leadership without a challenge and they proud of it.

And of course Russia are looking at Ukraine,  Moscow believe that they own Ukraine since XVII century and they would never let it go, Ukrainians tried so many times to break from Empire or Soviet Union but they failed. Now Russian elites still see Ukraine and other countries from old sphere of influence as their provinces.
