The JRPG's are just Final Fantasy clones. FF series is the only JRPG series worth talking about in the mainstream gaming world.

Thank god I'm also part of the Niche. Otherwise I will be missing out on many great Jrpgs. Also pokemon and dragon quest are two other 'mainstream" jrpgs that are worth playing.

JRPG's are also classified as  either Action  or Hack n' Slash in Western European/North american nations.

Pokemon and Dragon's Quest are high selling games but I would not classify them JRPG's. I call them action games.

How is Pokemon an action game? All combat takes place through menus. If you were using self-doubting spiky haired emo types instead of cute monsters, you would probably recognize it for the JRPG that it is.

Are you serious. How are they anywhere action? They are TURN BASED. That is the total opposite of Action. Dragon Quest and Pokemon are much more Traditional rpgs than Final Fantasy is now. Even before I would rate dragon quest as a more traditional series. Just so you get the idea of what dragon quest and pokemon are here are a few videos of their so called Action gameplay.

Have you even played these games?

Now lets look at Final Fantasy XII in comparison.

Which is more of theaction game?

I have not played anyone of those games and  FFXII looked most like an Action game

Fallout 3 is much less of an "elaborate FPS with RPG elements" than Mass Effect.  I'm pretty sure Fallout 3 will have an optional turn based-type combat system, my understanding is the player can choose how to play it.

But I'm confused, because Fallout 3 and Mass Effect both much more RPG and much less shooter than RE5, are they not?

Fable 2 is an RPG... and an AAA game... and it may be the GOTY. You sure you want to pass it up?

Not sure at all - but the first Fable didn't excite me that much. Will see when it comes around.

I wasn't a huge fan of the old RE titles, but I love RE4 to death. Its hard to explain, even when it is a solid shooter. I love the combination of action, exploration, collection, theme (zombies/demons), story ... and shooting.

I may well love Fallout 3, wouldn't surprise me - its the sort of genre I usually love.

...

From the sounds of it, Lost Odyssey is my pick of those three. If there is one thing I HATE, its a RPG (of any sort) that is too easy. It loses the entire tactical element of the game, and reverts to a boring churn-fest.

I started off loving FFTA2 (DS) - playing it on hard. It was a real challenge, but in the end I think it was just a balancing mistake. Once I got past "the hard bit", the game become incredibly easy and now (20 hours later) has become really, really boring.

Can Dragon Quest even be considered mainstream. Not of the titles have done well in America and Europe.

In Japan it's a phenomenon.

I usually look at WW sales when determining if a game is mainstream or not, unless somebody specifies a region. Although I think DQVIIIs 1 million between the U.S and Others is pretty good for a very Hardcore Jrpg. It seemt hat SE is targetting the West a little more with DQIX also. While it does sell amazing in Japan, it doesn't sell bad in the west. Much better than most Jrpgs.

make sure to get kazzoie and tooie in the arcade
really fun games! when it releases...
