Forums - Gaming Discussion - Apple to take over the living room?

Maybe not the most informative title on what is inside, but I couldn't come up with any better. Sorry!

Anyway, to the thread.

I can't really see how a serious analyst can predict Apple to take over the electronics market.

I was planning to go through their financial reports, but I found out some guy already had. Lucky me. http://www.systemshootouts.org/

The main point of the thread is the numbers, not my feeling really.

Apple Ipod sales in 2007:

Roughly 52M

This equals pretty much 78% of the handheld music division.

That's pretty awesome.

Apple Iphone sales over last 12 months (since launch):

Roughly 5.5M

Nokia sold 440M in 2007. They say this is 40%. Also, the last 12 months should be fairly equal to 2007.

So Iphone has roughly 1-1.5% market share in the mobile phone market.

Mac sales:

7764K, or 7.76M in 2007.

The overall PC sales are roughly 266M for 2007

This means that Apple has roughly 2.9% market share.

Apple Itunes sales:

Itunes sold roughly 2B songs/movies in 2007.

No idea about the market share.

When people talk about iPhone, they usually talk about the marketshare of all smartphones rather than the marketshare of all cellphones. They know that it's an upmarket device, so they compare it against other upmarket devices with similar feature sets rather than downmarket cellphones with far fewer features and razor-thin profit margins. Comparing those two markets is kind of like comparing console and PC hardware sales.

Last I heard, iTunes had about 70% marketshare for legal music downloads, but I think they face a lot more competition when it comes to video downloads.

Apple's bid to take over the living room has been more or less a flop so far. The iPod and the Macintosh probably see more use in living rooms than the Apple TV does. This might turn around as Apple builds up iTunes' strength in video downloads and if they can release a more interesting Apple TV 2, possibly with an IR pointer interface.

Short reply:

Not my living room.

Long reply:

I own an Ipod, I own a Mac (that I never use, I hate Mac OS)

I will never buy another piece of Apple hardware. I don't like the user interfaces, I don't like the way people talk about the "greatness" of apple products... It's like a cult.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

While Apple has great hardware....(I own an I-Pod Video/ Wifey has a G-4 I-Book), looking at your numbers, they dont scream "Dominate" aside from handheld music. Cell phone/Home Computer base % is still extreamly low, and Apple knows this. My PC & XPS Lap-top still occupy the majority of my time, as well as non-Apple related entertainment electronic products.

I think Apple makes some great stuff, but taking over my living room, not so much, and not anytime soon. Just my opinion, but thanks for the numbers and the post, interesting to see how their divisions are doing.

i dont like apple....

In that case, it's a lot worse than comparing PC and console hardware sales.

After all, 2007 console sales were 33.33M (no kidding) in 2007, whereas PC sales were at 266M.

PC hardware, is in fact only 8 times bigger than console hardware, while I believe that's not the case for smart-phones.

Fun fact: Video game hardware in 2007 = 28% of PC hardware sold in 2007!

Not now.. but in the future... Apple is targeting a very smart audience: the twentysomething people.. the young, trendy, no kids, just starting their life, people... Apple hopes that they will continue to buy Apple products in the future as the twentysomethings are turning into thirtysomethings, then into fourtysomething. fifty etc..

I don't know if the Apple TV is such a flop. Maybe when you compare to the iPod, but not when you compare it to all the other dedicated set top boxes out there. There is some NPD data that in the US, Apple TV is the #1 device for movie and tv show downloads in the living room. [1] That may or may not change with Netflix' free streaming service .

The iTunes Store is the biggest music retailer in the world. It sells more music than Walmart.
