That's not relevant to SMG's performance, which is the controlling factor here. I think it probably will, but it's not definite.

I think it is perfectly relevant that from 1996 through 1998 it didn't have to compete against LoZ:OoT (99 for Smash) as a launch game.
2007-8 Wii had Mario Galaxy, Smash, Mario Kart, Zelda....
Also in 1996 there weren't all the big franchises like there are today on other consoles. Sonic was already dead. There was no GTA, Halo, New Final Fantasy, MGS, etc.
@Cougarman: Banjo came out in 98.
I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.
i dont think so,though i would want it to outsell it
I think Galaxy will pass SM64... but not a lot!
Although it remains 5 millions, Galaxy is a "long-seller" like New Super Mario Bros.
Because, if you look the charts of NSMB, you can look that after its first year, there were 9.6 millions units sold and more DS. Today, there are 15 millions units sold and the game is selling well.
So, Super Mario Galaxy is not yet sold in bundle (not yet or never?), the game released only 8 months ago, no cut price, only one christmas...
However, SMG would pass by far SM64 if the Japan has bought SMG... because, Galaxy is not yet million-sellers in Japan, when NSMB has sold 5.5m units! And even, Mario64 sold 2m units, whereas there were less N64 than Wii...
- No predictions -
I think it will... It's the killer app on the Wii.

Can Halo 3 outsell Super Mario 64?
That should give you your answer.
It will take the length of the generation to do so.
I don't think people realize that Galaxy could still sell 1M copies a year in say, 2010 or 2011. Slowly but surely, the total adds up. (Nintendo had 10 catalog games sell over 1M copies in fiscal 2008, including DS launch games like Mario 64 DS.)
And even with the Mario team working again, they may not make a game to compete with Galaxy. They'll want to shake things up again.

Yep. Because a game on a comparitively limited install base, from a traditionally frontloaded franchise, which was one-upped by a better game in it's genre a matter of weeks after it's release, is totally analogous to a game on a comparitively larger install base, from a traditionally long-legged franchise, which won't be one-upped until at least 2 years after it's release. Good point.

It'll be close, but I don't think so.
My guess is 10 million or so for Galaxy.
However, we shall see.
