Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Eiji Aonuma: Wii won't alienate core gamers

we'll see. im not sure nintendo can stand not to alienate their hardcore base. they will make most of their money in the casual sector as the ds has shown, with the occasional big franchise release. hint hint, thier two hardcore franchises, zelda and metroid (sans the ds zelda cause that did well so far through its first week), have pretty much failed to muster sales. it might be me but nintendo would be stupid to concentrate on the hardcore.

my pillars of gaming: kh, naughty dog, insomniac, ssb, gow, ff

i officially boycott boycotts.  crap.

In an interview with Nintendo Power this month, famed Zelda director Eiji Aonuma had this to say when asked how Nintendo can expand the gaming market without alienating its core base:

It’s because of gamers that games have come as far as they have… it’s not Nintendo’s intent to alienate those people… We think we can involve everyone — people who played games in the past because the approach is so new, and people who were never gamers.

People avoid change like the Plague, and gamers like myself are no different. But even though the Zelda director says Nintendo won’t alienate core gamers, said players better anticipate the “new approach” assuming they haven’t already; otherwise there’ll be some disappointed folk like those we’ve already seen. The question then becomes, will the final result be better for gamers, non-gamers, or both?

The part I highlighted says it all... Core gamers on the Nintendo better prepare themselves for the "new approach" on the system or face disappointment. What does that mean? Well anyone reading between the lines will take it as meaning more "casual" games on that system at the expense of "hardcore" games.

I agree, at least for now.

Readers should note carefully that the highlighted part is the blogger's words, not Eiji Aonuma's. The only part of that post that came from Aonuma is the middle paragraph:

"It’s because of gamers that games have come as far as they have… it’s not Nintendo’s intent to alienate those people… We think we can involve everyone — people who played games in the past because the approach is so new, and people who were never gamers."

I think that is what says it all.

I don't get it. In one thread, Nintendo is criticized for using the same IP over and over again. In the next thread, they're criticized for alienating traditional gamers by doing things that are too much of a departure from tradition. NEWS FLASH: You don't have to like every game that comes out on a given console to enjoy your own experience with that console.

Diomedes: Reality says that Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl are all coming this year, not to mention games that have already been released or third-party games yet to come. That's plenty traditional for me.

Well said Entroper.

@Rolstoppable - Amen. Better yet, let's just forget that word "hardcore." I hate it; it's so warped now. I'm a hardcore gamer 'cuz I play games all the time, a lot of them, and many different types of them. Some kid who has only ever played Gears of War or Resistance is not hardcore solely by virtue of the fact that they've played those games. Hardcore gamers, to me, are those that can get beyond a certain art style to appreciate good gameplay, and who thirst for new/interesting/varied game experiences.

Hell, I'm a hardcore gamer because I can get over myself enough to enjoy a casual game if it's a good one.

Instead of "hardcore" and "casual", let's try categorizing games by "fun" and "not-fun," "original" and "seen it."

Prediction: Wii passes 360 in US between July - September 2008. (Wii supply will be the issue to watch, and barring any freak incidents between now and then as well.) - 6/5/08; Wow, came true even earlier. Wii is a monster.

Well said Rol.

Legend, I think you should get ready too, because MS has talked about drastically increasing their casual projects.

Oh, but when MS does it, its cool.
