First Day Sales: Big Start For Phantasy Star Portable

Phantasy Star Portable starts its handheld adventure with a bang yesterday as 217,000 copies of Sega’s Phantasy Star Universe port were sold on its first day according to Sinobi, who also noted that it’s 90% of the initial shipment and several stores run out of stock of the game. Sega have reportedly increased its shipment to 400,000 copies in the wake of the brisk sales, of which Sinobi says many has been reserved as well and not sure if he can get one for himself this weekend.

The big release of the day is supposed to be Soul Calibur IV for PS3 and Xbox 360, the game sold 91,000 copies with 56,000 copies of them the PS3 version. Nintendo’s Rhythm Tengoku Gold for the DS made a huge start as well with 150,000 copies, ten times better than the GBA version. Hudson’s PC Engine compilations are the other debutant but both start poorly, Tengai Makyou Collection seems to has more fans with 4,000 copies sold while Ginga Ojousama Densetsu Collection managed to sell 2,000.

WOW i never saw that coming! I thought it wouldn't sell so well judging from the sales of Phantasy Star Universe, I guess I was wrong!

Why would this series pick up all of a sudden?

Because PSP(the game) is similar to Monster Hunter and the PSP(the system) happens to be where the MH fanbase is.

The game did really well on its first day. I wonder how the legs will be and if this well affect the sales of Monster Hunter.

It won't really affect the sales of Monster Hunter much.  As for the legs, well have to see next week's sales

It has ad-hoc co-op.

PSN - hanafuda

It is a game directly tailored to appeal to the MHF fanbase.

that's like saying every MMO is tailored to appeal to WoW fanbase.... or every FPS is tailored to appeal to Halo fanbase.

Ad Hoc games are hot in Japan, a good franchise with good online mode is going to sell on the PSP. Just like a good FPS will do the same in US.
