Mrstickball- I just looked at MS's latest earnings statement.....the games division lost some 144million dollars if I remember correctly

Entertainment division may have had losses but that does not equal xbox hardware itself being unprofitable, which was mrstickball's point.

its still relavent. If the games division make 100 million and the entertainment division loses 144 million (made up gains number) and this causes the xbox division to decreas in profit, for arguments sake 50 million that still nets MSFT a 194 million loss.....

in fact it make even less sense for the division as a whole which lost money to take one thing making them money and cut it down even more which would decrease revenue.

I thought MS wants to just cruise along and make some more profits from its gaming division to please shareholders. Have no price cut this year and wait until next year when Sony reduces the price of PS3 in America and MS counter it with a price cut on the X360.

The X360 hardware is profitable, and still would be after the cut.Remember folks: The 65nm archatecture is set to launch THIS MONTH. More than likely a Sept. price cut would happen when the newer, cheaper-to-produce systems hit the market. MS did this last year - Drop the price when you make a console revision.

They are shedding a boat load of cost with the Jasper revision, especially if the rumors that they are combining the GPU/ED ram die are true. Its a shrink of the memory/chipsets and not just the GPU and you can bet that warranty costs on this model will be lower than the Falcon model - thats for sure.

I think its a little aggressive but maybe thats what they need to regain their lost momentum?

Annual revision of X360 console. When will a slimline X360 appear on the market?

The lower the price gets on that damn console, the harder it is to hold onto my Microsoft boycott... I mean, $200 for the arcade?  I'm only interested in the JRPG's, so that's all I'd need (I believe).  Damn!

Also, I doubt that mole was telling the truth anyway, he's known to be a pathological liar.

This particular mole has made 4-5 contributions to Ars Technia before..All were right - 40GB PS3,60GB X360, Falcon, and Arcade.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Maybe because the 360/PS3 are appealing to exactly the same crowd? Sure, there are some differences, and some gamers who buy both, but people who don't buy a Wii will mostly buy either a 360 or a PS3, not both.

Wow I never thought I would fully agree with you NJ5.

If this is true the question if the PS3 will see a pricecut before christmas also has been sealed.

Well, I don't agree with that last part because I really think Sony is focusing on profitability. It's possible, but not likely.

This will have a minimal effect if any in Europe.

Considering this isn't a price drop for Europe I would say, yes.

If you believe the posted roadmap rumors - Late next year.

The reason? They can package the console very small if they combine the GPU/CPU. A lot of the signs indicate thats where they'd be heading if you consider rumors of the Xbox360 being combined into everything from TVs to toasters. Its the endgame for the Xbox360 - its the next 3-4 years of its life that they are thinking about now. Wow thats pretty messy and illogical! Im tired sorry, so im out.

For more information - check out the Fusion CPU from AMD for more ideas about how they will be designing the shrunk chips.

Tease.

The pricing for the Pro and Elite models is pretty much right on the money... but I'd be very surprised to see the Arcade go below $249. If Microsoft does indeed slash it to $199 AND include a software bundle with it, this could affect Wii sales as well, and PS3's attempted comeback could be derailed permanently.

Wii will continue to remain @ $249 regardless because of continued demand and supply issues, but if 360 does huge numbers and Wii starts to slow a bit after the holidays, look for an official price cut by the end of Q1 next year.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Note to Ars Techina: just deliver news, This sad, over done attempt to be witty completely fails. I know you loved the movie...and I know you wish you could have been a fiction writer....but you're a gaming blog. Just do what you do and leave the purple prose to real writers.

You should call Ars Technica and tell them that.  I'm sure they'd be greatly amused to hear it.

This mole also prdicted a 120-160GB PS3 in January of this year, so I would not call his record 100%
