Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Why does the 360 sell so well in America?

One thing fan boys. (Either Consol) If only one consol dominates the quality will fall apart (8-bit NES had Sooo much garbage on it)

Here's hoping they maintain a healthy competition!

Unreal is great...but it makes no sense to argue it, when Halo is a console pusher and Unreal isnt. Halo is distinctly different from many shooters. Resistance franchise and KZ2 are (while beautiful games) the most generic shooters ever. The only thing that gives Resistance any hope is that 300 ft monster. KZ2 better be good, because the first game sucked, terribly. Gears of War and Halo are hot, different console sellers, while Resistance and KZ2 would be considered generic shooters trying to even step in the footsteps of those games.

I think you have some very interesting terminology very mixed up.

First off, system seller =/= mean good game. It means a game that's gotten MUCH attention and is marketed to all hell. All it has to have is a ton of people wanting to buy it. Quality means nothing.

And no. Resistance had as much, if not more depth than Halo did. Secondary fires a bitch and a half to master, and if you refuse to acknowledge it's existence, then the game is second rate. The fact that is HAS a feature that you must learn set's it apart. Every gun you pick up in halo is just point and shoot. It's very easy. Very generic. That's why so many people can have a great time with it, 0 unique learning curve. All the weapons are "balanced" and all the weapons are the same to use. (- the sword or hammer of course :P)

Resistance 2 is going to be "different" by having the squad based objective system in 60 man battles. And secondary fires, and classes for it's co-op, and.. well it's just unique in a bunch of ways :P We'll just leave it at that.

So far from what we've seen of Killzone's multi-player, it's going to have multiple classes, and multiple sub-classes, giving you the choice to pick and mix, BAM, already more unique than halo :/ It may not be a good feature, and it may be poorly implemented, but it's different.

Gears was good, but not all that unique, it was basically a "rip off" of killswitch for PS2, and added online play :P Needed this generation for sure, but the uniqueness is questionable.

Halo and Gears were "hot" items because Microsoft deemed them to be :P I saw more advertisement for Gears and Halo than I think I've ever seen for any product. Maybe a little less than coke, but you get the message :D

so ndp say ps3 > 360

YTD numbers
Wii - 3,482,000
DS - 3,187,000
PS3 - 1,608,000
PSP - 1,482,000
360 - 1,354,000

I forgot to ask.....I heard somethin about PSN users only being able to play with others within their own country, is this true?

No, that's just for MGO... konami are using their own servers and that's what they wanna do. However I don't know about japan and america. But US and Others work just fine for CoD4 and Burnout Paradise.

-Resistances antagonists are not interesting and neither is the protagonist. It's a generic cookie cutter game and quite redundant. I have no doubt that it will be more fun than the last game but it doesn't even touch Halo. Halo is a game all of its own with it's own distinct feel. Master Chief is an awesome and I doubt Resistances character could be used in any fun game outside of Resistance as a flagship character. Masterchief is was and always will be Sonys forefront protagonist mascot...a testament to 3rd party dominance on their system over their 1st and 2nd party. Halo has more interesting ranks of creatrues with their own temperments and AI. They don't all fight the same. They talk to each other and run around and change formations to try and kill you. Resistances devs are creating a bunch of creatures that just want to kill and dont have much personality. Halos does. Marcus Fenix is far more interesting than any character in KZ2 or Resistance. He also could be used as a mascot for games.

Gears of War 2 just like 1 gives great visuals and focus into your shots and delivers awesome gore. Part 2 will definitely deliver. It has more to deliver in game. In halo you can knock people off bikes and have arial wars as well as wars on the ground. It's amazing and influential and even you can admit that. If you don't it's really ignorant. I think as far as Shooters are concerned PS3 owners need to fear M.A.G. because it wont hurt 360 games, it'll definitley hurt the sales of other PS3 shooters, like Socom including hogging PSN internet usage with 256 players per map. Running themselves in circles is all Sony is doing. Without clear control of their 3rd party, they are in trouble and you know it.

I'm actually overwhelmed, I'm just not sure how to respond -_-; No?

Having "interesting characters" doesn't make your game unique. Halo had a pretty decent story, I digged the Sci-fi, but man the game was grueling at times, and the multi-player is even more dull. Just no. Knocking people off bikes and all that other nonsense o.O? Again no. The vehicles were terribly implemented, and they were just generally un-interesting. If the entire point of aircraft, is to get yours in the air, and jump into another enemies, for the only sake of taking him out of it, the whole idea could have been avoided period, it's obvious neither of you care about piloting one, just taking someone out of his >_> And don't even get me started on that game's A.I. -_-; It was terrible to say the least. Guys with guns wanted to shoot you, aliens without guns did some wierd shit and eventually tried to kill you, I've seen that in umm.... every game I've ever played :) Kudo's to the guys standing near cover getting shot at who still feel like... standing there... And did they even bother making the enemy respond to grenades o.O? I don't remember them ever noticing...

Marcus fenix was interesting? Wow. I'm an easy pleaser, but you sir take the cake :)

I like the comment about Sony running themselves in circles by introducing games that actually take umm... thought and maybe some form of strategy. I agree entirely, that's no way to hit mass market. Popularity holds no place for intelegence I guess :(

PS3 outsold 360 by almost 100 thousand units in June according to the NDP. That was just in America. Last month VG charts had PS3/mgs4 under tracked by quite a few thousand units. They do the best they can.

360 does not currently have a better games lineup but it did for the past 2 years and American gamers went for it. Now the consoles are too similar for 360 users to jump ship. The battle is now for people who have yet to buy an HD console and it's 360's "all of your friends are on XBL" Vs. PS3 is substatially more future proof".

PS3 will take NA by 2010 for sure. Will that be too late? Nah this console cyle is going to last much longer then the ones in the past.

Having interesting character doesnt always make a game interesting, which is true, but Gears is interesting and so is Halo and this cannot be denied even by the biggest Sony fan. The vehicles in Halo are amazing and really with you, it's just a matter of preference. If you don't like it fine, you're one out of millions upon millions who have played this game. Aircraft when in the hands of good players (I don't know who you're playing against) are deadly air vehicles, especially the hovering bike. Whenever I played Halo, I played with the same guys I played Battlefield 1942 with or even Counter-Strike.

I know people who are amazing at air strikes, so it makes for a great match. Um...tell me...since when in Halo did humans attack you? Of course all of the ranks of enemies want you dead. You go through alot of issues in the storyline, because of the human-alien alliances. Resistances alien guns look stupid. At least Halo brings some well thought out fantasy sci-fi into the picture. I'm not a very easy to please guy, which is why I haven't been very impressed by the PS3 FPS games. I love their graphics, don't get me wrong, but they are typical, when i've been playing shooters since i was little in wolfenstein, doom and all and I don't feel that they bringing anything to the table thats new, besides for the huge 300 ft boss, which I believe is a glorified movie, where you press the button at the right time.

Sony isn't showing strategy. All they are doing is denying and telling people to wait. Im buying a PS3, but I know where the consumers stand with Sony as opposed to business affiliates.

This thread has been very interesting. Its really a puzzle as to why the 360 isn't dominating the ps3 anywhere but the US with its library of games.

My 2 cents: perhaps the wait is longer for RROD consoles in EU and Japan whereas in the US, its a simple straightforward process.

The online cost couldn't be a factor since the 360 is waaay cheaper than ps3 in some parts of Europe.

I really don't know lol.
