Forums - Sales Discussion - Mario Kart vs. Super Smash Brothers vs. the rest of the generation

A couple of weeks ago, we had the discussion here which game will sell better - Mario Kart Wii or Super Smash Brothers Brawl.

Now that both games are out in all regions for quite some time, it seems clear that MK Wii can stay ahead. It is currently at 6.59 million w/w, while SSBB is trailing behind with 6.42 million. Both games are still selling respectable amounts each week (MK: 176'370 units last week, SSBB: 110'592) , but MK is now outselling SSBB in all three major regions, and it was expected to be the better legged game anyways. Therefore, it seems clear to me that MK will once again be the best selling classic franchise on a Nintendo Home console, as it was already the case on the Cube.

On a side note, here are the current numbers of other games with great sales from this generation:

GTA IV (Xbox 360): 5,695,212 (44,562)

GTA IV (PS3): 4,179,492 (41,841)

Super Mario Galaxy: 6,696,988 (35,743)

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Xbox 360): 6,234,547 (28,387)

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PS3): 3,419,479 (26,537)

Halo 3: 8,059,673 (25,469)

*in brackets: Number of units sold worldwide in the week ending the 19th of July)

Looking at these numbers, it seems possible that Mario Kart Wii becomes the best selling game of the current generation on an individual platform, altough it has to be seen how long its legs are staying this far ahead of Halo's. If we combine the sales of the two GTA's and the two CoD's, the race becomes even more interesting: with both games currently over 9.5 million sold w/w, it's still a large gap to Mario Kart's 6.6 million. I have no doubt though that MK reaches a number over 10 million, so it has to be seen how long the FPS keep selling.

I think that the games I listed are the ones that will fight over the first place this gen (If we leave out the Wii series, that is). Of course, possible sequels to those titles like CoD 5 or a possible SMG 2 will have a shot at the crown as well, though it seems that usually the first game on a new platform sells better than the second intallment.

NOTE: I'm only talking about home console sales here, if we take in handhelds, things shape up quite differently.

Thoughts?

Mario Kart is going to destroy. I was a doubter, but it's now clear that nothing is going to stand in its way. I think that if any game is going to beat it, it will have to be a game that nobody will see coming.

Edi: And this goes for all console games, not just Wii titles. CoD4 and GTA IV will put up a good fight, but MK Wii will blue shell them out of the lead.

IF MarioKart Wii follows in the footsteps of it's DS cousin, there will be no stopping it.

MK:DD came in second place on the GC behind SSBM.  Just thought I toss that out there.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

Yep. I started a thread when i was drunk once that claimed:

"Mario Kart Wii will have legs longer than (and almost as sexy as) Maria Sharapova's. I'm pretty sure they will be a good bit longer than Brawl's, and only slightly less impressive than Wii fit's."

I still stand by it for the most part... now i think its legs COULD be even longer than wii fit's. Looking back though that was really not the boldest prediction, so I'll add a much bolder one to it:

MK will come close to DOUBLING the sales it has now by this time next year.

In other words I'm calling 12million + by August 1, '09. And i do think it will be the winner of this gen unless something reaaaally surprising happens.

HA! Okami, Z&W, and Psychonauts say hello from their sad and lonely poor sales positions.

Judging by its sales, Mario Kart Wii seems unstoppable. It is selling like crazy and it will have huge legs. I thought that SSBB would beat it, but now that seems extremely unlikely.

Currently Playing: Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart 8, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Super Smash Bros for Wii U

Predictions:

Super Mario Galaxy will pass Super Mario 64 in total sales CORRECT!
