Forums - Gaming Discussion - PS3 Now EA's Single Biggest Bread-Winner,,,(best gaming selling platform)

The reason that the PS3 generates more revenue is that the PS3 games sold in Europe are worth 1.5 360 games sold in the US due to currency valuation. 1 euro is 1.5 dollars thus a 60 euro game is a 90 dollar game. Additionally the PS3 is starting to get close to the 360 in US sales, which combined with being way higher in Europe, gives it a significant edge that will only grow.

Also I am 99.99% sure I'm not alone when I say I only buy the PS3 version if both are available due to my strong preference for the PS3 over the 360. I'm positive that more and more will join the PS3 only club as trophies take off. I've already bought several games based on trophies (most recently burnout paradise, which is an EA game with trophies AND DLC that comes out first for PS3 by several months). As a bonus Burnout Paradise is awesome beyond belief.

Any for this qtr, 360 is going to absolutely dominate for EA sales, so it's going to be intersting to see how that is discussed.

That's nice? Nobody is talking about next quarter, just get over it.

The problem is the title misleads.  When I first read it I thought the title was suggesting that EA is communicating that their PS3 sales have caught up to and surpassed their 360 and Wii sales, which suggests a trend.  There is a strong possibility that many factors have led to a "surge" in PS3 software sales for EA, lately, and that the PS3 sales percentage might fluctuate dramatically in the future.

The point of the OP appears to be stating that the PS3 is now EA's breadwinner, but this very possibly might not be a sustained pattern.

I am surprised that no one has brought up the impact of piracy to the long term sales of video games yet.

One factor is Rock Band ...

Although VGCHartz's game sales alone (probably) do not account for the PS3 having higher revenues than the XBox 360, but it is probably one of the main reasons both system's revenues are so high; when you're selling a game for (potentially) 3 to 4 times what a typical game sells for (because of high manufacturing costs) even smaller sales can dramatically boost revenue without adding a similar increase in problem.

There is (possibly) also regional considerations, where in Q1 they might have released games in Europe which sold better on the PS3 ...

The last consideration (partially related to RockBand) is that PS3 owners may be more willing to pay for digital downloads ... If the average RockBand owner is willing to buy twice as many songs for the PS3 as they're for the XBox 360, if sales were high enough this could be (very) noticeable on the financial statement.

Problem with that argument is that Rock Band was just released in Europe exclusively for the 360..

With makes these numbers even more incredible for the PS3 (or piss poor for the 360)....

It doesn't matter really, the Xbox360 will be ahead on the PS3 in EA revenue for the next 2-3 quarters anyway. You have Rockband timed exclusivity, Madden, Dead space and for all of these games the Xbox360 version sells more. Probably other games but thats all I can think of.

BTW...maybe you should have posted the games released, as it would have explained ALOT of why the numbers looks as they did:

--

Battlefield: Bad Company™
PLAYSTATION®3
--
NASCAR® 09
PLAYSTATION 3
--
UEFA EURO 2008™
PLAYSTATION 3
--
Battlefield: Bad Company
Xbox 360™
--
Command & Conquer™ 3: Kane’s Wrath
Xbox 360
--
NASCAR 09
Xbox 360
--
UEFA EURO 2008
Xbox 360
--
NASCAR 09
PlayStation®2
--
UEFA EURO 2008
PlayStation 2
--
BOOM BLOX™
WiiTM

Hmm....methinks those figures are going to skew heavily towards 360 for this current qtr, with releases of madden and bad company, which will blow the crap outta last qtr for EA's PS3 numbers, and bring some reality back to the world. What absolute bunk reporting by Kotaku and by Spartan.

Isnt it funny how some people just LIVE to hate Sony, and hate anyone who dares post any news that has positive Sony info in it? What do you want them to do, add a side note that says "even though these numbers are positive for Sony, don't worry, next quarter the PS3 is going to get its ass kicked."

Do you know how ridiculous you look right now? Do you even care?

That's because everyone is still busy making their games. Since day1 EA is able to put out PS3 games for it, dumb down or not.

Edit:

This is without a doubt damage control, but it is also very true, imo: The YoY increase is an artificial number created by the fact that the Q1FY08 quarter had very few games released on the PS3 by EA. The numbers here only represent one quarter in which the PS3 has been the top earner for EA. The numbers for said quarter are relatively low all around. It is unlikely that this alone indicates a future trend which implies that the PS3 will be the most profitable console for the company. However, that is certainly a possibiility.

Certainly is a possibility.  Why are you "damage-controlling"?  YoY for PS3 doesn't mean much but it's interesting that PS3's numbers went in an opposite direction of 360's numbers over the last quarter.
