Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why do I hate Gamestop so?

My reasons for hating Gamestop have already been stated, pretty much, but here I go:

1. "New" games are already open. What the hell? Am I that incompetent, that I can't open my own games?
2. Pre-Order harrassment. Now I know how a girl feels when she goes on a date with me!
3. Price increase/Price drop.....AT THE SAME TIME. Time and again, I price a game. Come back a week later, and they have a 20% off sale, but the price of the old used game HAS GONE UP $2!
4. Sticker hell. Stickers were awesome, when I was 7. Nowadays, not so much. Unless they smell like strawberries when you scratch them!
5. Display boxes for games they don't have. Then why the hell is that Starfox Assault case still sitting there? Did somebody trade in the case, or did an employee steal the game?
6. Know it all idiots: When a clerk tells you that you have to buy an intercooler or your console will catch on fire, it's hard to take anything they say seriously anymore.
7. Fanboyism: It's okay for an employee to have a preferred console. Just respect the fact that EVERY customer doesn't feel the same way. Don't try to impose your PS3/360 will on a Wii gamer. They should be trying to satisfy the customer, instead of trying to satisfy some fanboy agenda.

^^^Oh yeah, I forgot the "Dude, you got here just in time! We only have one copy left!" line I here whenever I buy a game on day 1. Call of Duty 4, Metroid Prime, Mass Effect, Halo 3 (Which was used, when I bought it. WTF?), Mario Kart Wii, and GTA IV. I always get there just in time to get that last copy! I must have the luck of the Irish!!! But I'm black.

I dislike that game stop will seel you "new" games that have no case or manual.

I also hate when I'll wait a while to buy a game I might be interested in, and then the only copy they have left is the beat up shelf copy that's been pawed by way too many 8 year olds. I suppose that's my own fault for waiting though.

But, most of all, WTH is with all the stickers they feel the need to slap all over used game boxes. Then I end up trying to peel them off when I get home (they just look too dang ugly), only to leave nasty sticky residue or leave half the backing if I'm not careful enough. Especially the older ones. Couldn't they at least use less sticky stickers? ><

Amen to that!! So many of the posters in this thread hit on some Amen worthy comments. But I just HAD to co-sign on this one.

The staff just doesn't give a damn for the most part. I think most of the old Rhino's employees who stayed past the changeover have moved on to better jobs (graduated college or moved to higher paying job) and this new staff here are just people picking up a paycheck. They probably know little about games.

I refuse to buy a new game without a case and manual. I can understand if a trade-in didn't have it especially for really old games or portables but there's no excuse for that with new games.

And I hate that generic GameStop packaging that replaces the original game cover art work. They made that art work for a reason. Might be a symptom of this downloadable age. Even in music industry, people forget about the importance of the "album". Physical media and its presentation will always be important.

How hard is it to get the actual case art? Whew. I just HATE that store.

Damn you Blockbuster's!! You caused this to happen!!

John Lucas

P.S.: I never fall for that preorder stuff nor that extended warranty BS from other major retailers. Money grubbing jabronies.

WE ARE THE NATION...OF DOMINATION!

Thanks for the links to those threads, NiKKoM. That explains a lot. I'm more than a little pissed by those guys now.

We have EB games shops here in canada which are owned by gamestop. It's really not bad buying games there, since I only buy factory sealed games as their used games are overpriced and/or missing the original manual and box art. At worst they offer a $3 scratched disc guarantee. I've never felt hassled shopping there and I actually enjoy using their used trade in system for my own benefit (though I never trade in my own games there).

Demon's Souls Official Thread  | Currently playing: Left 4 Dead 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, Magicka

I'm a Toys'R'Us kid, been getting my games from there since the Atari 2600.

I do not care for Gamestop at all.

Nor do I care for Best Buy.

Dont let gamestop employees harass you. Just get your game and run.

Buy from Target or best buy or circut city new, amazon or ebay used. Buy only good game you have researched, and then horde games and never sell them back. That is what I do now.

If you've read GameStop Diaries Pt1 on the 360, then this is a repost that you may have already read, so skip it.

Wow..I like gamestop. A lot actually. I'm not even an employee - and never have been - and they let me borrow games like that=P I take extreme care of anything under my care tho, and always return games in perfect shape. On top of that, if they have a game 2 days before it's official release - I have it 2 days before its official release. Gamestop treats me good, so I can't really complain. I can understand the frustration from people who don't get this treatment but hey..all i can say is - be nice. I go to gamestop, buy games, reserve games, talk to the guys, hang out. They know me pretty well by now, it's where I buy all my games and they know it..so they know a valued customer when they see one I guess. I also buy all strategy guides there (because everywhere else sells strategy guides, they just NEVER have the one you need) and I also buy all of my hardware there - controllers, USB cables, play-n-charge kits, etc etc.

But you could also say this is because of where I live. There are only 2 stores where I live that sell video games - GameStop and Wal-Mart. And I don't go into Wal-Mart unless theres a gun at my forehead, so no matter how bad I thought GameStop was, I'd still shop there..otherwise I'd have to drive 45 minutes to find somewhere else.

Addition: I understand why that would bother people, and if I was like 99% of their customers, it would bother me too. But as of right now, I'm benefitting from it - not to mention I've only borrowed a game once, but they'd do it again in a heartbeat for me. Maybe you guys' GameStop just has crappy employees - all the guys who work at the one I used are around my age, real easy to get along with, really into games and have a lot of experience with games. That being said, they're into a lot of the same games I am, and some I'm not, so they're really good at reccomending say one soccer game over the other, or basketball, or FPS, etc. They're good to me - I can't complain.
