Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Fable 2: To Be Short - about 12 hours long for main game!

It seems that Fable is more inclined towards it's side quest and exploration aspect. There is a lot more you can do in Fable 2 like start families, explore the whole world, buy out every building that stands, side mini games and of course the plethora of side quests. Even still, 12 hours for the story is, for us, is on the short side but if the gameplay is good and it turns out as all of us are anticipating, then we won't be complaining.

help,

how does one start a families?

Fable 1 allowed the player to actually woo someone, ask for her hand in marriage, get married, etc.  I assume it's something similar.

Something I should have said in my original reply... to understand an Oblivion or Fable 2 you have to try and avoid thinking along the lines of "main" and "side" quests. Oblivion is structured so that you have several quest lines (fighter's guild, mage's guild, thieve's guild, assassin's guild), along with a "main" questline that adds a "main story" to the open exploration, along with a lot of side quests that you find simply by wandering around, such as the vampire and artifact questlines in the imperial city, avenging a farmer's late wife, etc. And there are a lot of dungeons that aren't even a part of a quest line... they just exist for the exploration and treasure hunting.

I'm hoping Fable 2 is more of the same with a lot of refinements.

I don't care that it's only 12 hours, I know it will have a ton of stuff to do. It will be fun in all. It's the only game I'm looking forward to on the 360, so I really hope it comes with a ton of side quests.

  • 2010 MUST Haves: WKC, Heavy Rain, GoWIII, Fable III, Mass Effect 2, Bayonetta, Darksiders, FFXIII, Alan Wake, No More Heroes 2, Fragile Dreams: FRotM, Trinity: SoZ, BFBC2.
  • Older Need To Buys: Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Kart Wii, Deadspace, Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2.

There is definitely more to list that I want, but that's my main focus there.

This is similar to Oblivion. If you just go through the main quest in Oblivion, you will only perform about 10% of the quests in the game.

It's important to realize that these are *not* linear RPGs... they're open-world variations. As such, most of the gaming occurs outside the "main" quest. That's why completing the main quest in Oblivion doesn't actually end the game... you get a special set of armor for completing the questline, then you can just keep playing and do the 90% of what's left.

This probably drives to distraction people who prefer a fixed storyline, but for those who like openworld conquest (World of Warcraft comes to mind), this is a very good way to structure the game.

In summary, this is likely a non-issue with Fable 2.

I agree. I don't remember how long it took me to complete Oblivion's main quest. Maybe 30 hours? No idea, because I did about a hundred hours worth of sidequests between starting and finishing the main quest. Then, I did about another hundred or so hours of more sidequests and generally messing around. Point is, I agree that that's not how WRPG's are structured. Not for me, anyway. It might take me 50 hours to complete the main story of Fable 2 because of all the other stuff I cram in the middle. Maybe more. I don't care that the main story is 12 hours. LOTR was about 9.

Lord of the Rings, right?  If yes, which one?

Fable 2's story probably won't even be that great if the main quest only lasts 12 hours but I don't care as long as there are plenty of sidequests.  Even so, it is still possible to have a 40 hour story and still have many sidequests i.e.Final Fantasy XII

All three of them, combined. The movies, I mean, not the games(okay, maybe a little more the 9.) My point was sometimes people see 12 hours of story and think it's nothing, but even if by RPG standards it's not that much, it's still alot when compared to other forms of media. The sidequests should carry the game much farther and the whole 'being there' aspect should surpass even Oblivion being that you can interact more meaningfully wih the NPC's(i.e. marriage, families, etc.) See Crumas2's post about 600 hours in Oblivion(WOW, by the way) and that's what I'm talking about. Some people are just as excited about the stuff after the main quest. I'm excited about the whole shebang.

Man that's short. What's with all these current gen RPG's being so short. The point of an RPG is to have 30 and 40 hrs of gameplay. That's why it's such a hardcore genre... because you have to put time in it and complicated gameplay.

12-15 hours main story line, with open world, side quests, and co-op means a good 50-100 hours for me, thanks for reconfirming day 1 purchase.

Only issue I've ever had with WRPG's is when they focus so much on side quests, that the main quest is boring in comparison and I never actually finish it (Oblivion)

The pleathora of things to do in this game is more than enough for me to forgive the relatively short length of the main story.  Oblivion takes only 20-30 hours to finish the main story but you could still play it for hundreds of hours just because there was so much to do.

The big JRPGs take 30-40 hours or more just to beat the main story. WRPGs on the other hand, aren't as story driven as JRPGs and expect you to do more than the main story and that explains the short length of the main story in WRPGs. Only casual RPGers play RPGs for the main story alone.

@Torillian

I should remind you that there are WRPGs with compelling stories i.e.Mass Effect, Planescape:Torment  In fact, it is argued that the best stories in WRPGs are better than the best stories in JRPGs.

Agreed.

The first Fable was barely ten hours.

I'm not too certain that side-quests will keep me coming.

I like my RPGs long, If it's not more than 20 hours, I'm generally disappointed.
