Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3: compatibility to PS2-titles via software

After introducing the PS3 without Emotion Engine in Europe the news were filled with bad news about the compatibility of the software-emulation. Many titles were running, but with some problems.

How is the situation now, some firmware-upgrades later? I'm interested into it, because I want the ability to play my old PS2-games also in the future (and possibly buy some games) and I want to know if I buy a PS2 myself (I'm playing on another PS2) or if I buy a PS3 after some pricecuts.

Some games I'm interested in: Final Fantasy X and XII, Okami, Ico, Dead or Alive 2, Beyond Good and Evil, God of War, Wizardry: Forsaken Land.

Are these games running in software-emulation without any problems? Thanks for your information.

It's supposed to have 90% of PS2 games compatible from what I know.

Dunno about those specific games.

Edit: Found where you can check for a European backwards compatibility list.

It's not a complete list apparently, but I can tell you Okami and Ico both work fine according to the list. The others aren't on it.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

I have all those games but I have a U.S ps3 it p[lays them all perfectly.

The playstation site for Europe has a list of compatible games here:

http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/

Hope this helps. Note that not all titles on the list are fully compatible, this is indicated by one to three 'blocks' where three is a-ok and one is 'has issues' ;)

Edit: Lucky us the website is not functioning properly at the moment and only lists a tiny amount of games where I know there are many more :-S

Thanks! I'm guessing you know what it is?

Yeah, that site isn't updated regually enough.
All of my games now work thanks to the 1.8 update, though a couple do have issues (mainly slowdown and jerkyness).

The only thing that doesn't work is a Monter Hunter demo I got with DMC3 (which does work) - but that doesn't really count.

1.81 also allowed me to go online with a couple of PS2 games aswell.

All the backwards compatibility that I care about is Pro Evolution Soccer 6

Thanks for the hint to the website. Hope the list will be filled. I will look on it regularly on it, as new firmware-updates are available. That hopefully makes emulation better.

When I last played FF XII, during some of the cutscenes it was really jerky, and was pretty horrible to look at, however, I think that was with Firmware 1.70, as I haven't played for some time (had GCSE exams for the past coupla months).
