An employee at Gamestop the other day told me about that the Wii was intended to be Nintendo's last jab at stationary console gaming.

Your first problem is listening to some twit from Gamestop.

How true that is.  Last time I was there the guy asked me if I wanted to pre-order StarCraft 2, which was only just announced a few weeks ago and might not be released for a couple years.  But just to explore the stupidity, I figured I'd ask him if the min reqs were known yet.  He said no, but that Vista would be required.  And the hilarious thing is that the only thing that is known about SC2 is that it will run on Vista or XP! (see the SC2 FAQ)

Bottom line, never, ever, ever listen to a Gamestop employee.  And with regards to the subject of this thread, the vast majority of Gamestop employees I've talked to have been anti-nintendo, so you can especially ignore something like this.

-Manella: Yeah... sux0rz! I hate missing out on food...
-Maya: Nick... what does "Sucksores" mean?
-Phoenix: No idea...

I don't know why but with the demo of brain training I always got brain age 60...

@konnichiwa - "They [Nintendo] almost always use for their games a colourfull look with not big details [sic]."

Really now. Yeah, Metroid games are always under-detailed, as are Zelda games right? And don't even try to use Wind Waker as an example. A colorful game for sure, but under-detailed? Maybe if you close your eyes. Mario games are colorful, but detailed to no end. I'm tired of hearing people bitch that Nintendo makes games that don't try to look like real life, as if it were easier to make those games. There's more polish in most Nintendo games than most other games.

Get an imagination and some security in your masculinity, so you don't end up playing only life-like shooters to keep your self-image intact. (And I play life-like shooters too, the interesting ones; I just don't ONLY play them, since I also love the colorful fantasy element of many Nintendo games. Resurrect your inner child.)

Prediction: Wii passes 360 in US between July - September 2008. (Wii supply will be the issue to watch, and barring any freak incidents between now and then as well.) - 6/5/08; Wow, came true even earlier. Wii is a monster.

Gamestop sounds really biased about nintendo..Ninendo never stopped having profits with any console (except the red screen of death that was Virtual boy). I could never see nintendo as a game developer only, instead of producing new hardware. Hypothetical Question: if that was to happen, on which console would N. first party characters appear? Gates would be more than happy to offer huge amounts  of money  so he could penetrate that elousive japanese market,  but i think nintendo would preffer sony as a platform.

I'm sorry that I don't have a reference, nore remember who specifically spoke for Nintendo, but years ago, I remember Nintendo officially said that they will never become strictly a game developer. They will always make consoles, and if for some reason they go out of the console buisness, they will go out of buisness all together.

Maybe someone remembers this?

That is why I said almost.   Zelda and metroid are exceptions.
God of war looks a lot more detailed than MT and Zelda;

Well there were some statements by Yamoichi (i think i got his name bad) that if the GameCube did really bad it could be nintendo's last console and they would focus on software only.(after all, software is what made Nintendo bigger then Sony, not that Sony made it that difficult)
Anyway, there were also plans that Microsoft would accuire Nintendo, a part of the deal was that Nintendo had to stop all hardware development at once. (i think they were making the GameCube back then). Yet that did not happen either, and Microsoft ended up making their own console, buying Halo and buying Rare. (buying Rare wasn't the brightest idea ever, but Nintendo made a very (very!) nice deal there)

So you could state that if both the Nintendo DS and the Wii would all of the sudden show negative sales for the next 5 years, Nintendo would probably have made its last piece of hardware and focus only on Software.
Don't forget that Nintendo is N°1 in making the best AAA titles out there. Not that they made all of them, but just most of them. They also keep making new franchises that are extremely succesfull. And i think this will last as long as Shigeru is a part of Nintendo.

Another piece of memory is that the Nintendo DS was not supposed to be the follow-up of the GBA. They were making a GBSuperAdvanced but since the DS had such succes they cancelled it. (i think...) But if you see that the DS software is just skyrocketing, i would not expect they try to compete with themselves.

As a last point, i want to point out that they were looking into a graphical superior alternative to the Wii. They had a kind of multicore idea too and said they were still deciding what do do. After all i can expect that it can be a hard decision to bring out a console with just a mere hardware update and a remote. But they did, and did it good.

Thats what i like about Nintendo, they always have a surprise ready. I don't know if they will be able to keep it up the next time around but in the meanwhile its great to pick up a game thats not giving the "Week 27: 27th game thats about shooting an enemy thats either alien or german and has better graphics!" At least Nintendo tries to innovate, and i think they will try as long as we don't stop them. But i'm not planning to stop them as long as they keep surprising me and are cheaper. (however i think the DS lite could be sold at 100€ if they really wanted)

@konnichiwa - Oh, you said almost. Almost, except for most to all of their big games. My bad.

And GOW maybe (maybe) looks more "realistic" than Zelda and Metroid in some ways (blood, I'm not sure how much else). But "detail" is something else. Compare development times, budgets and staff size, then toss in Nintendo's perfectionist philosophy. Then move on.

True. In Miyamoto's own words "A delayed game will eventually be good, but a bad game will always be a bad"
