Forums - Gaming Discussion - which fighting game takes the most skill?

Sink, Ike is actually more around mid tier, with Link at low. At least, based on the community's general consensus and tournament results =p

That's what I had last heard too.

I don't pay much attention to tiers though so I wouldn't be too shocked to hear a couple of characters were sneaking around without my knowing about.  ^_^

I'd say the Smash Bros series because there's so much more than just hitting your opponent until his bar is empty like other fighters.

You not only have to be good at damaging your opponent but you gotta also know how to deal the killing blow and on the flip side you have to know how to come back to the stage if you get knocked out.

And that's only part of the things you need to know to survive against someone who is skilled at the game.

Mario's utilt, dsmash, upair, dair, nair and usmash are good for stringing combos
Mario can dthrow to up air chase
Mario can use his cape as an opening
His dair is good for poking shields and approaching ue to it's multihit properties
Spacing his bairs works as an approach
Shorthop nair is a good albeit predictable approach as well
and he has good KO power in the form of his fsmash, usmash and FLUDD to recovering opponents.

If you're going to flame low tier characters you don't even play at least get their info right, Riot ;)

His "combos" can be escaped fairly easily. You can air dodge his tech chase. Dair into someone shield is just stupid, unless you like getting grabed and/or punished. Bair and Nair do not work as a safe approach, because the range just isn't there. Also, what's stopping someone from jumping into the air and hitting him first? Someone with a sword or any other disjointed attacks will destroy that crap. You need to use the Fire Balls and punish from there. That's all Mario is. That, and he can do some ledge gaurding tricks. Ike is no where close to high tier, he sucks.

I'd like to see Ike get into the air and actually use a move fast enough to stop Mario. It's not like all his aerials are incredibly slow, right? Oh wait..

Dead or Alive 4.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

They're disjointed with a shitload of range. That's enough to stop Mario in the air. They don't need to come out fast if you know how to space.

Ike's bair is lightning fast though its hit zone leaves a bit to be desired.

When I face the sandbag during matches where I play as Ike, I practice short hop to bair a lot.  ^_^

Point I'm trying to get across Riot is that Mario has just as many options for approach as Ike and is every bit the viable character he is.

Super Smash bros Melee so far... we will see what kind of advanced techs are found for brawl as time goes on. Even so, basic techs are tough to master. Take Lucas's bat smash attack. It has very minor start up lag, possibly not even enough to get your own move out to counter, or even get your counter attack up (may be lucario could)
So, you can take the hit, attempt to counter/counterattack but most likely fail, shield, dodge in place, or dodge roll towards/away from Lucas. (you could also short hop air dodge, but except for highly specific circumstances, ex trying to kill lucas with a wario waft, this is idiotic) If you are close to him, dodging in place is probably best if you have incredible timing, and dodgin behind so do an AAA punish combo is probably your best bet, as you can then punish. If your character is further away, dodge in place and do a quite Fair, or dodge roll away and charge at them, ready to counter whatever they do. And this all takes place in about 1 second of gameplay.

i'm not a professional at any fighting game but i'd say the fighting game that takes the most skill to play (and be good at) would be one of the games that requires you to study framerates - i'd probably nominate virtua fighter.

if this was about fun, i'd say that street fighter and tekken are more accessible than vf. i bought ssmb but haven't really been able to get into it. after 20+ years of life meters maybe i'm just too old to grasp the concept... and fun of it.
