Forums - Sales Discussion - Is the Wii really competing with PS360?

Are there any sites that will actually discuss things like this without being swarmed by butthurt Wii fans that claim I'm 'discounting the Wii's success' or some other bullshit? This community is turning into an awful clone of Gamefaqs. It's a total struggle to make a point or have a reasonable discussion within the sea of ignorance.

To be honest it sounds to me that, by putting the Wii in its own category and not as a true videogame console, you're trying to come up with an excuse so that you can say the 360 is winning the console wars.

Game Informer ownership stats:

Xbox 360 alone: 33.8%
PS3 alone: 16.0%
Wii alone: 18.6%

360/PS3: 6.7%
360/Wii: 19.1%
PS3/Wii: 6.4%

All three: 14.5%

Total ownership:
Xbox 360: 74.1%
PS3: 43.6%
Wii: 57.6%

My reason for citing this information from the August 2008 GI --

-- if a magazine put out by a company that sells video games is seeking to see who owns what, then they must be comparable products and in competition for the same consumer dollars.

Notice that handhelds (PSP, DS) or cellphones (iPhone, LG, etc.), were not included. Nor were consoles from previous generations (PS2, Xbox, GC) or computers (PC, Mac).

An HD console and a Wii can be considered to be complementary by an owner. But from a market perspective, they are all video game consoles.

People have civil discussions here all the time.  But when the millionth topic that has been beaten to death gets pulled out and the OP has a reputation with similar threads (wii sales driven by peripherals) people don't have much patience to keep humoring you.

Especially because at this point it seems clear that you're not looking for people to discuss this with you.  You're looking for people to agree with you and when they don't you get all mad and start complaining about how you're being bullied by the Wii fans.

Of course they are competing. Their primary function is to play video games.

wow u guyz really killing him in this thread not one person agrees lol.

Oh, for pete's sake.

Nintendo says they aren't competing against other systems because their strategy is to compete against non-consumption.

But that strategy also entails competing asymmetrically with PS3 and 360, which is implied every time Nintendo mentions "disruption." All the things you mentioned show Nintendo's asymmetric values, which are the very reasons WHY Wii is winning.

Sony and MS have picked up the "not competing" line straight from Nintendo, yes, because they are getting their asses handed to them, and because their hands are tied in terms of responding to asymmetric values. They are ironically claiming their own inability to compete as a talking point.

Yes, an iPod and a stereo system are complimentary, because I can plug my iPod into my stereo to play music. But as others have said, Wii vs. PS360 is more like iPod vs. CD players or iPod vs. other MP3 players.

You're tedious, Shameless. You're the one swimming in the "sea of ignorance," and it's made of bitter tears.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

For me, The PS3 and the Wii really do not compete. I preferr some game experiances on the PS3 better (COD4, GT, Oblivion.. would suck on Wii). However I do prefer the Wii for many genres... there is just little crossover. The only Genre that I really battle over is the Sports genre. I went with Wii for PES, but I am leaning to Madden for PS3.

The only thing they truly compete for is a share of my gaming budget.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

If you have rushed in this thread ready to post 'they all play games', think about it for a moment - radios, MP3 players and sound systems all play music. Are they competing? Obviously not. I've tried to think of the ways that the two console styles are similar and drawn a blank:

Same control scheme? No, traditional vs motion.

Wii  -- traditional and motion

Others - traditional only.  No real competiton, wii only good choice.

Same business strategy? No, attracting old gamers vs attracting new gamers.

Wii - Attracting old gamers with tons of classics on vc not to mention old nintendo fans.  Attracting new games with blue ocean strategy.

Others - Old gamers only, and the real old gamers are best served with the wii.  So, again no competition, wii only good choice.

Similar price point? No, the Wii is noticeably cheaper than a high end PS360.

Exactly as you say.  No competiton.  Wii wins.

Similar gaming experience? No, very few multiplatform games are on both the Wii and the PS360.

Competing game experiences as they have different exclusives.  Not sure your point, as this actually might provide some competition to the wii?

Similar target audience? No, young teens/males vs families, children, older people and others.

Again wii is a superset. as it has teens/males too.  Others have no competition.

You get the idea...

This leaves the question of what exactly is the Wii competing against if not the PS360?

Obviosly the PS360 fail to compete with the wii in too many important areas.  They are no competition for the wii.  That is why the wii has the largest market share and is gaining market share.

So, if you can't compete... claim that you are in different markets?

The wii is also competing against other areas for entertainment dollars, such as going to the movies.
