Forums - Sales Discussion - Is the Wii really competing with PS360?

The 360 premium is selling for cheaper than the Wii in the UK.

@OP depends on when - if you mean at launch because for a split second they were, then a split second later domination began.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

Wii tapped into a relatively new market like the ipod. It really isn't competing with anything. Its simple, if you want to play games with motion controls, you buy a wii...nothing else!

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

Was the Ps2 in competition with the XB/GCN? If yes, look at it like this:

2001 sales for all last gen consoles: 20.6M
2006 sales are fairly similar, they are: 8.4M for Ps360

2002 sales: 32.3M
2007 sales: 16M

2003 sales: 30.3M
2008 sales: lined up to be ~ 25M maximum.

So realistically, either lots of people have just stopped buying consoles, or the Wii is in direct competition with Ps360.

The Wii has created an environment specifically for the 'casual' gamers of the Playstation generation - they have migrated away from the 'hardcore' tendencies of the PS360. It is also a question of money and affordability.

Do Sony and Microsoft want these gamers to buy their systems?
If the answer is yes, then the systems are in direct competition ...

Your question is irrelevant. A radio company wants music lovers to buy their radios but they are not competing with CD player companies.

Wrong, to some extent they are competing against each other.

To some extent, every company in the world is competing with each other in that they want consumers to give them their limited money. You'll have to ask Ioi why he doesn't track Microwave sales.

It's so sad that some people continue to bring this up.  The correct answer is no.

The Wii is not competing with PS360.

It's annihilating them.

Get over it already and just accept that even though the Wii isn't your type of gaming doesn't make it irrelevant.  It is still directly competing with the PS3 and 360 regardless of what MS/Sony/Nintendo PR says.  As long as consumers are choosing Wiis over PS360 you can't pretend it's not "really competing" with them.

Instead of going out of your way to make an incredibly stupid and off-base comparison, try a realistic one, like portable MP3 players and CD players. The half-witted analogy you give in your first paragraph is closer to the relationship between heavy machinery and personal cars - both automobiles, but intended for very different purposes. This is unlike consoles, which are all intended as home game systems.

The competition betwen different types of portable music devices, some of which differ markedly in technology, price, etc. is much closer to the mark, which is why, even if you had thought of it, you would not have used it.

This thread is about the market, fanboy crap is not interesting.
