Forums - Sony Discussion - I'll never buy a game for my PS3

I have bought exactly ZERO Blu-ray titles for my PS3...whenever these '360 or PS3' threads come up i always parade the Blu-ray factor, but have never bought into it!

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

What server are you on in FFXI?

Phoenix, I take it you play?

I did for the longest time, but I was Alexander though.

I started on the PC at the NA launch and played for about 3 years.  I know had every job at least above 10, most of them in their 20's and 30's, BLM and WHM in the 50's, and then I got SMN up to 72 or 73 before I finally quit for good.  I really wanted to get to 75 but I just never had the time to find a party and level.  I spent most of my time with my LS (we were one of the top NA linkshells on the server ^^) and just having fun with them.

I had much more fun in that game just doing quests, exploring, and crafting.  When I first started I actually found out how to get a warp scroll in about an hour so I spent my first few weeks just selling warp scrolls and crafting so I was level 10 character with over 1 million gil at NA launch and had been set money wise since then.  :-p

Ok, slightly provocative title, but its sentiment is true enough for me.  I spend 95% of my gaming time on a MMOLRPG called Final Fantasy XI (PC version), and the rest on my Wii.

However I bought a PS3 about 3 weeks ago, and its so far doing everything I had expected of it.  Providing a media centre in my front room.

Matched with some media centre software called Twonkymedia on my home server (with 4TB attached via a Drobo), the PS3 is exceeding my expectations as a high def all-in-one media centre.  I can play all my HD file formats, WMV, MP4, MKV (needs to be made compatible first using mkv2vob), M2TS, DivX, without glitches or issues and can finally get rid of the awkward Shuttle PC running Windows XP and various media players, via a wireless keyboard and mouse.

I've started building up my Blu-Ray collection, and enjoy checking out the trailers on the online shop.  I like the fact it has a Gb ethernet port since my home network is Gb wired, and I'm just waiting for Sony to release their new range of Amps which have 3 HDMI inputs and support all the sound formats (should be out early August).

My guess is that more and more people will be buying the PS3 almost solely for BluRay and Media capabilities, and for me at least the games are just a bonus (if any come out that interest me).  In fact since getting the BluRay remote control, I exclusively use that instead of the uncomfortable PS3 controller.

The only one gripe I have so far is that the upscaling of SD DivX content is very poor (Seems to just pixel double instead of de-ringing/de-blocking like a H.264 file would insist on), but since more and more content is HD these days, I can live with that (I'm still hoping they improve DivX playback in firmware though).

So anyway, I don't get to see many people comment on using their PS3 as a media player here, but I'm always checking to see how well this generation of consoles are doing out of interest.  I'm in no way a Sony Fan, I was pretty much put off from buying anything from them again after the laptop battery affair, rootkits and sending Liksang out of business.  But since Bluray won the HD format war I've been able to jump off the 360/PS3 fence and start my disposible income spending once again.  I also managed to nab a 40GB model for £249 from Amazon which still seems to be hard to find, so I feel I got a bargain.

holy crap im sorry i didnt read it but what server are you on and jobs?

oookay?

so you created an account just to tell us here on a GAMING website?

Should I give you a medal or something?

I believe the numbers of consoles sold is relevant on this website? My 2p worth is just stating that the PS3 is now (for me at least) viable for my lucrative front room spot, and my purchase has added 1 to the PS3 ticker.

ps. if you do have a medal and its shiny, feel free to send it over, but I don't really need one.

I could just as well buy a 360 just for solely a cheap DVD upscaler. That's 1 added to the 360 ticker. Your point is? Unless there is some study...I don't think it can be said for sure whether a lot of people buy it solely for a Blu-ray player or not.

I'm not an MMO fan at all but last month a couple friends got me to try FFXI so I got a free trial and played it for a bit.  I noticed several things:

1)  The community is about as lively as a dead hamster (Titan).  For an MMO, it sure didn't feel like any part of it.  I realize it is an aging PC game with a dying community so I didn't have high hopes anyway.

2)  The combat is tedious and uninspired.  Out of the many RPGs I've played, FFXI's class system is among the worst I've played with.  Absolutely nothing felt rewarding for the effort required to get it.  For the amount of time required to get anywhere I could be making more progress and having more fun in tons of different games.

3)  FFXI has the absolute worst controls of any PC game I've ever played.  I've never seen a control scheme so bulky, so unintuitive, and simply so awful on any PC game ever.  This is coming from someone who has been an avid PC gamer since the days of eTangle/vTangle, vgaTrek, and Commander Keen.  FFXI made it quite clear to me that Square Enix had no freaking idea how to make a PC game.  From the very first moment I pushed the Escape key and nothing happened, I knew it would be downhill from there.  It was appalling.

If it's what you and your wife enjoy, more power to you.  I know I couldn't stomach playing a game like that for any length of time.  ^_^

All fair comments in this day and age.  The community factor has gone downhill since I started, the same group of friends we made early on are still with us, so on a day-to-day basis we have our little community to keep things feeling alive.

It's a hard ask, but for anyone to really experience the battle system properly you need to get at least 1 job to 45, meaning another needs to be at 22 as a subjob, and thats just gonna take a long commitment from a new starter.  However once ppl get that far they get hooked as so many possibilities open up and you have a much bigger choice of abilities and spells.  I have completed all of the missions in all of the expansions (so far) and have really enjoyed them, and alot of quests.

There seems to be a shocking lack of skill in some of the lower lvling, mainly because experience isn't being passed around from the older players,  they tend to find different ways to lvl new jobs 1-30 instead of repeating the same old same old and partying with new impatient players.  I think the only way to get into this game now is either to find a good friend ingame early on, who is willing to mentor, or join a RL friend already in the game.  However its been going for 6 years now, and is just as strong as ever player base wise (over 500k paying players).

As for controls, I played on the PC keyboard for a total of 2 days I think, before getting a Gamecube to USB controller for both of us.  The GC controller works perfectly for it (it does take a while to get used to the UI, but I think thats the same of any game with many choices).  I'm completely lost if I don't have my controller now.

I doubt many of us have access to such data, but I work with a typical bunch of 25-45 year old IT people, all of whom have plenty of disposable income and are talking about £1000 amps and 50" Plasma screens frequently.  They are reaching the conclusion that the PS3 is currently the best entry into Bluray for their AV setups, and this is also repeated in the hifi mags currently.

3 of us alone in our office already have bought PS3s for Bluray as the most compelling reason, and I'm sure the same can be said for many home cinema buffs.

I doubt the same ppl would consider a 360 as a upscaling DVD player, thats old tech now (and mostly superfluous since hi spec LCDs and Plasmas do a good job of upscaling component 576 progressive signals from hi-fi dvd players)

actually no, if he specifically wanted a media center then a straightforward BD player would not have accomplished this. and any comparable media hub with BD capabilities is a helluva lot more expensive than the PS3.

Surely newer Blu-ray will incorporate what he wants out of the PS3 for cheaper, and right now, I'm getting that he uses it to watch movies and listen to music. Unless he wants access to the PS Store, then I change my stance.

@redspear: But you are currently gaming, and want to game; he doesn't.

I doubt any future dedicated blu-ray player is going to have the general computing power that the PS3 has... Maybe so, but there is a lot more to media hub that just the blue laser diode and a remote control.

I hate trolls.

Systems I currently own:  360, PS3, Wii, DS Lite (2)
Systems I've owned: PS2, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn, 3DO, Genesis, Gamecube, N64, SNES, NES, GBA, GB, C64, Amiga, Atari 2600 and 5200, Sega Game Gear, Vectrex, Intellivision, Pong.  Yes, Pong.

Welcome to the site :) Grats with your purchase. Also a good thing you are happy about it. (Silent beast ay ?)

And to add to the topic, i have a total of.. 3 blu rays and maybe, 10 games ? .. well thats around 10 games in hard copy, have a few more on psn.

But really i'm also very satisfied with my playstation 3 as a multimedia center. The fact that i can transfer from most pcs (cant make it work properly yet on vista .. damnit) is just another bonus that makes it really easy to share between the machines :)
