Kaz Hirai Wonders Where The GameCube, Xbox Are... Because he wants to know if the PS3 will be on good hands or not...

On Topic, keep that mantra about the 10 year plan will only hurt their image, and if this happen what will Sony have VS the "Wii Too" and the "Xbox 20XX":

Graphics: No, Sony will be the "last gen tech" and the fans suddenly will not care anymore for graphics...
Control: Against the Wii mote nothing, a peripheral could be launched, but since is not the main feature it will be like another EyeToy, but the fans will love the waggle...
Storage: Only the mighty bluray will stand up, but with faster solutions the other two consoles will leave the mighty PS3 behind...

So, whats left? Games...

Based on what Kas was saying focusing on the PS2 still selling along with the PS3. I suspect what he is really saying is that that the PS4 will be released at about 6/7 years into the PS3, but they will continue the PS3 support well up to 10 years.

While I'm sure this is exactly what he means, sadly Sony really doesn't have that much control over how long the hardware lasts.  It's already been pointed out that the software will determine how long a game console will last in the market.

Of course, they could continue selling the PS3 as a bluray player for as long as they want really, even if nobody makes games for it...

The real question is whether or not you have that luxury when you aren't the overwhelming leader in sales.

There are some pretty obvious reasons why the overwhelming winners of the last 2 generations had long lifespans relative to the consoles they stomped into the dust (in terms of sales) and it isn't just because Sony wanted them to.

By 2010 or 2011, the PS3 may actually be making a profit. So Sony is likely to continue with the 10 year plan because they'll need any profits they can from the PS3 to stave off the almost certain losses they will receive from producing their next console. Unless of course Sony decides to sell their next system for a profit, but I don't see it happening.

2010-2011? By then it wouldn't matter. People would obviously follow the market leader (Wii) and/or just buy a (cheaper) 360 because it's getting the same games as the PS3 anyway. If they FINALLY make a profit in 2010-2011 and not sooner...that's pretty bad.

If and only the 360 wont be dead untill then :P

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

Well, we'll see in 2013 if the PS3 is still around or not if Kaz was telling the truth or not.

Finally Kaz is starting to sound like a Sony exec! Keep the great quotes coming Mr. Hirai. I look forward to the laughs...

I am sure he is telling the truth that that is what he wants for the PS3.  But what he wants has very little influence on what Sony will NEED to do with the console.  We will see in 2013 if what Kaz wants is even possible.

Sony seems to be delusional right now when talking about the console wars. Yes we know PS2 beat GC and Xbox but that has nothing to do with this generation. Because if it did PS3 would be on top, not 3rd.

Not to mention fails to note in that 9 yr cycle thus far of the PS2 that the Xbox and GC were never in front of it. Hell only reason Dreamcast was in front of it is because it released earlier haha.

Running off your mouth with the same ol' hoo-rah of promises means nothing. By 2011, the PS3 won't even reach half of what the PS2 is now (140m). I wonder when Kaz thinks the PS3's peak year will happen, 2010, 2012?

One thing I notice about current PS2 sales is that almost all the games sold are either casual or sports games. Without that casual audience, sales wouldn't be all that great.

It seems like the hardcore users are the first to abandon systems when something more powerful comes along. The casual and sports users are the last to abandon older systems because graphics aren't as important to them.

Ironically, this is the same reason the Wii is winning. The "mass" don't care about the numbers. They care about price and entertainment.
