Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Do Nintendo really never make new games?

I was reading the folksoul thread (wow, that was a lot of work) and one point that got made which I seem to hear a lot is something like this:

"Nintendo never do anything new, all we ever see form Nintendo are the same things, Mario X, Zelda Y, Metroid Z."

I wonder how much truth is there in this claim?

So what I want to know is, can anyone name a single developer that has created more new IPs than Nintendo over the last few years? We'll say since the turn of the millenium, which would then basically include the entire of the previous generation. So just new IPs, and I mean completely new, not stuff like Mario Strikers which is clearly just part of the Mario IP, but new worlds.

I have no idea how many Nintendo has created but I'm willing to bet it would be more than any other single developer/publisher in the world.

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

well why dont we start of by making a list of how many new ip's nintendo has created since 2000?

Wii Sports
Nintendogs
Brain Age
Super Smash Brothers (pre-2000? Not sure)
Disaster: Day of Crisis
Project H.A.M.M.E.R.
Hotel Dusk
Elite Beat Agents
Pikmin
Eternal Darkness

That's all I can think of right now. Any more?

Well... (I'll assume you mean published, and second parties and stuff)

Brain Training
Big Brain Academy
Drill Dozer
Chibi Robo
Golden Sun
Legend of Stafy (apparently Japan only)
Doshin the Giant
GiFTPIA (Again, Japan only)
Advance Wars (New to US)
Battalion Wars (only loosely related to Advance Wars)
Sin and Punishment (Japan Only)
Animal Crossing
Pikmin
Kururin (Japan Only)
Magical Vacation/Starsign
Rhythm Tengoku
Wario Ware (Wario's inclusion is tertiary)
DK King of Swing (You can discount if you want, but it is original enough)
Custom Robo
Trace Memory
Hotel Dusk
This weird Mecha game
Nintendogs
Band Brothers
Ouendan/EliteBeatAgents
Polarium
Electroplankton
True Swing Golf
Project Hacker (Japan)
Clubhouse Games
Card Hero (Japan)
Meteos (Published)
Touch Panic
Magnetica
Wii Sports
Excite Truck
Odama
Geist

And I'm probably missing the odd DS game or something.

That's a lot of new IP, all things considered. But it's easier to ignore it for the sake of saying Nintendo makes nothing new, right?

Animal Crossing

Warioware?

EDIT- Oops, Deguello beat me to it.

Meteos is 3rd party
Kururin was already in Japan(an NES game)
Custom Robo is OLD.

Fire Emblem, darnit! (one of my fav game series now) ;)

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

If by Custom Robo being old you mean 1999.
I only listed games Nintendo published somewhere. It's still a preponderance and enough to refute the idiotic claim that Nintendo doesn't make anything new ever.

Excite truck shouldnt count either but other than that it looks like a good solid list. anyone up to doing to same for type of list for Sony. It would be neat to compare.

even though nintendo has created many different franchises..why would it matter?

every mario/zelda/smash bros. game sells more than 99% any of the companys could dream of

Sweet and ready to roll!
