Forums - Gaming Discussion - What you should know about exclusives

A new nerd terror has been spreading through the internets, and no 36 sided die has come up with any reasonable explanations sans the ever famous "IMO" analysis.

First lets talk about FF13 and it's defection to the green monster. The decision was not an easy one. Even Square is saying that 360 production would not start until the game is finished on the ps3. Not to mention that this "announcement" is not even yet an official one, simply a plan for things to come.

Added to that, square is keeping japan ps3 exclusive, and the rest of the titles that revolve around the FF13 universe are so far assumed to be also exclusive. Sony seems to think that Microsoft left a couple thousand briefcases in square-enix's board room.

Others seem to think Square-Enix has finally come to it's senses and are following the trend of 3rd party multiplatform publishers.

Lets get to the bottom of this.

When S-E(square enix, then just square) released ff7 for the original playstation. Nobody could have predicted that sony and Final Fantasy would become pinnacles of gaming. With Sony selling  over 250 million consoles since then, and FF becoming the most recognized RPG franchise in Video game history. This relationship grew stronger than you and your best friend could ever have if you had both been freshmen in highschool and then somehow both ended up billionaires with naught a care in the world save how you two would spend the money together and live the dreams that few kids in the world would dare.

Now, take the Japanese mentality into perspective. Japanese national business partners are even tighter than those two would be billionaire kids if they were related. Japan has a strict parent company approach where all "child-companies" like SE would gladly sink themselves before letting the parent company fall. That is tradition, and has been that way since japanese business was in existence.

Put these two factors together and you have a stronger connection than those two billionaire kids being older brother and younger, (or sisters) teaching and raising the younger brother and successfully making it together against all odds.

THAT is the situation we are talking about.

Now,

globalization has done some things to change things slightly in the past ten years,  but these traditions are still mainly upheld.

Following the globalization idea, Japan knows to do what it does best, produce tech, innovate. The protect it staunchly against other countries. It is the most basic form of mercantilism at work , in accordance with popular John Nash theories to protect not only the company or the country but to protect both. (including national competitors!)

So, how did MS convert on the hail mary reception for Final fantasy 13?

Sony seems to think it was with a boatload of money, and despite how much you all may think that square enix is just doing it for sales, please try to remember that the country of japan rose from almost medieval ages 100 years ago, to being one of the strongest, wealthiest, smartest, traditional, cultural countries in the world.

You ask any economist how it was possible, and they won't be able to begin to explain, save for an idea that the Japanese are "honorable" and protect each other more than any other country around, along with the business practices i've mentioned above.

MS almost certainly paid for this game. Sony should not be blamed for this "loss", and should not be expected to pay for exclusivity which many feel is "owed" to them.

Thank you for your time, and always remember,

"Don't think you know everything about the industry unless you are Nintendo"

Muskets/Guns.... when one army in Japan saw the effectiveness of these weapons... certain Traditions changed.

Sales... If you run a company no matter how honorable you might be.... if you have a shot for more...(as thus providing more income and the ability to pay your workers and keep your company alive) certain traditions have to change....

Boycotting the following:

1. Yoshi: He ate my car and spit out a toaster.

2. Igglybuff: Totally false advertisement. You can have as many as you like they don't buff nothing.

3. the Terms Hardcore/Softcore... We're talking Video Games. Not Porn.

4. The term Casual as relates to Gamers: We make them sound like outsider's that happen to play games.  If that were the case they'd own a PS3.

5. Donuts.... Beacause I drink Beer...... and the biggest fan of Donuts hates Beer.

6. Boycotts: Their so lame.

Good job grossly stereotyping inaccuracies across an entire race?

Good job not understanding how fiduciary duty works?

Good job completely mischaracterizing the relationship between SE and Sony?

I am really not quite sure how to respond to this thread; I think the first is the most telling argument, frankly. Square did much worse to Nintendo a bit over a decade ago. Thinking some imagined Japanese honor in business would keep them from doing it again is, in my opinion at least, both blatantly ignorant of the past and borderline racist.

Lol, when I started to read I thought that this point would come out at some moment... sorry but Sony is indeed the one to blame, do you think that SE, Capcom, T2 or any other dev happy put a lot of their money on a high budget project on a platform hard to develop, with the smallest install base??

First understand that Sony doesn't "own" FF no matter what a lot of people feel, if that was the case, Nintendo was there first... still the franchise moved away, why??? money... they are in the business to make money...

well read the bioshock developer interview regarding exclusivity of bioshock on 360.

its a quite decent read that lets you in on how exclusivity works. in a nut shell its not permenent and the deal runs out.

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

Interesting post.

But the Japanese value of loyalty has been under erosion for quite some time. The old idea that if the employee gave everything to the company, the company would always take care of the employee has been put to the test by years of recession. Companies have not been able to afford to take care of all their 'vassals,' and the chains of loyalty have been broken in the name of more practical concerns.

Self-interest has been on the rise in Japan for quite a few decades now, and just as Square was willing to turn its back on Nintendo in the name of self-interest back in 1997, it's willing to do the same to Sony today.

funny post who cares about exclusivity just enjoy the games

racist! HA now that's funny, because my friends from Japan Tomo and Shoko are visiting. I've been taking japanese business and cultural traditions for 3 years, and this is original post was what we all concluded from the story.

Did any of you read the bottom line where I said "Don't think you know everything about the industry unless you are Nintendo" first poster?
Yes guns changed war, but what makes you think multiplat is really any advantage in sales? Even a member of Square-Enix was interviewed recently and he said, "sometimes it is better to be exclusive. There is no one solution to sales." That is paraphrased
So, first poster thanks for 1. not reading the post 2. not caring enough to try to understand 3.not listening to anyone but your own biased views

@ALPHA&KASZ
ROFL RACISM??!?!? EVerything I have said is exact. The Japanese exchange business cards when they meet. Is that a racist judgement too!??! Do you think its racist to say that the Japanese innovate more than other countries? Do you have anything to back up your calling me racist? Do you have any examples where I am wrong?
How do you know SE-Sony relationship?
Why don't you both inform us please, since i'm apparently a racist.

PS3 has the greater Japanese installed base. Xbox 360 is America's HD console of choice. The end.
