Forums - Gaming Discussion - Whats so "fun" about the wii?

Slaughtering noobs in Smash/intense matches with people who know how to play is really fun. Also, new advanched techs are just coming out, so in a about 6 months after I have a strong grip on every characters best moves/strenthgs/weaknesses/ basic "combos" (no true combos) I will be able to pick a main and start learning those advanced techs. Right now I am working on my wario- hes all about erratic unpredictable ari game mixed in wit grabs, bites, fats, bike attack, and good dodging shileding for good measure. Wii and 4 new silver GC controllers will be worth buying for Fire Emblem and Smash and Kart alone its looking like. Wii is very fun.

At least 100 millions peoples wiil find the Wii«fun» before the end of this gen.

Every other post on this site, you read about how much "fun" the wii is. But what is fun? Fun is an activity thats "enjoyable". That said, I'd argue that "fun" is entirely subjective and people should stop using the word as a synonym for "wii".

I lost interest in the goofy character model-type games that nintendo seems to focus so much on. There's a wii in my house, it belongs to my little brother but I haven't touched it because there's nothing that interests me. I don't want to join my family playing wii sports upstairs. I'd rather go to my game room (in the basement) and try to get through the intriguing story of Legend of Dragoon.

These days, it seems like I'm weird because I don't want to have "fun". But I find it relaxing and interesting playing through LOD while lying on a bed and would rather play COD4 if I wanted to play with friends. We scream when we die (in the game), laugh when we kill someone else (in the game). Even though it could get frustrating when you keep getting killed (in game), its a sweet frustration and altogether "enjoyable" experience.

So my question to you is: aren't we (my friend' and I) having "fun"? If we are, isn't every console "fun" to its owner? Why do the wii crowd keep tagging the word "fun" like they are the only ones capable of having it? Is it only games with no challenge (wii music) whatsoever that are now "fun"?

Didn't read past the first paragparh, but reading the rest I would say it ties into my Smahs argument anyway.

I play clarinet, and for some reason I find difficult to master pieces that take a ton of work but sound awsome and make everyone impressed more "fun" than simple tunes I can play by ear perfectly, such as "deck the halls with boughs of holly"

I think gaming is the same way. Non-gamers like granny have no skill, so the only games they can enjoy are Wii music and Wii sports. Its a new expierience though, so it will be enjoyable. Pretty soon they will be a casual dilitante gaming granny, and will buy a DS and enjoy brain age and tetris and Nintendogs and mario kart DS and New Super mario bros. But they will never know the joy of getting fully eppiced in WoW and taking on a hihg level raid with a group of close online friends; the fun is much greater than that of Wii music, but it takes alot of time investment/skill.

Therefore, I argue that the harder games are, the more fun they are too play, AS LONG AS you have the skill to play it. In a post earlier this year, Disolitude said he loved Ninja Gaiden 2, a game that takes great skill. This game is considered "hardcore" because whjile it is highly enjoyable for some, it is only enjoyable if  you are greatly skilled at a certain genre of video game.

This is also why smash bros is the greatest series ever; it is fun no matter how skilled you are at the game!

Wii owners on this site saying the Wii is better because it's "fun" are just people that lack the ability to better explain themselves. Obviously any console, genre or game can be fun to any number of people. Just because some Wii games are advertised and played to a wider margin of ages does not make them more fun to play, like a fact that can be spoken. I do enjoy my Wii as I do enjoy my 360, PS2, PSP, DS N64, Dreamcast, etc. etc. I find games on all consoles that I consider fun, because all consoles that get a certain number of games will always have something to offer to a "veteran gamer"(I really like this phrase Reggie used) like myself. Some of my most enjoyable experiences are learning how to play a difficult game and gradually getting better at it. Madden and Guilty Gear come to mind. Sometimes my most enjoyable experiences come from a simple, yet addictive experience. Space Invaders and Zuma on my cell phone come to mind in this case.

For the best clarification on what Wii owners mean when they say the Wii is "fun", look toward Happy Squirrel's reply. He did a good job clarifying it.

I would hardly say that someone who had an obsessive compulsive disorder, and had to repeat their actions 20 times before they movied on, was enjoying life more than someone who didn't have this disorder. In a similar fashion, I don't think you can claim that someone who ran through the same dungeon 20 times to get enough equipment to move up to the next dungeon and run it 20 times is having more fun than someone who plays other games.

If you met me in real life, you'd be surprised that I play games at all. I'm miles away from what people describe as nerdy even if I share some values with them.

You and others like you (males age 15-34) probably don't get the Wii because it really is not targeted toward you.

Please do not take this as an insult. It just means that at different ages/stages in life people have different tastes. There are certain things that I did in my 20s that I would never do in my 40s. Time and people change.

I love RPGs. But I don't have time for them now. So a quick burst of gaming is all I can do. Thus, the Wii appeals to me. I also don't have to worry about most of the game content when my 5 year old son enters the room. And things are simple enough that he can play.

Fun is a subjective term. I honestly don't get why people go to slasher (or worse) movies. But people do and they make money. I accept that I cannot understand their rationale and move on. That is what a lot of "hardcore" gamers need to do with regard to the Wii.

Mike from Morgantown

Makes lots of sense. My only beef was the fact that the term "fun" was associated with the wii to the point where it sounded like you weren't having fun if you weren't on board with the wii. I'm much busier than I used to be as well. I still play RPGs, just in shorter bursts nowadays!

I really like SPRGs and for every class to have the best skills/gears/not miss any secrets so I may be mildly obbsisve compulsive. I only have a level 2x druid in WoW, and decided this summer to get a 360 and never play WoW again. My friedn plays WoW though and is fully eppicced, and by the way he talks about it I am positive he loves the game.

WoW isn't probably a very good analogy. I guess getting skilled at Halo/CoD/Smash bros and playing an intense high skill match is a much better analogy, as it is more comparable with my master a musical instrument analogy.
