Forums - Gaming Discussion - Whats so "fun" about the wii?

Wise words from Mike...people are different and that´s the way things are...human nature, tough, makes it hard for many to accept it.

This is a bit rude. You don't get it. Your question is from a very closed limited scope of perspective. I'm sure your not, but habits and concepts get set into place that can take some time to get over.

Your having fun right? good
Give COD to your Mother and ask her to have fun. Did she? very unlikely, unless you have that rare mom.
So your saying that she can't have video game fun becuase Nintendo's direction doesn't equal your fun and Nintendo needs to stop allowing other people to have fun? Is that fair to your mom? Seems like your viewing things from a self interest view.

I don't see capcoms Dead Rising Wii going to appeal to you mom anymore than Dead Rising for 360. So if Nintendo wants to make some games for your mom, so that maybe she will try out Mario Kart and easy to get into racer. Is that so wrong?

Did Nintendo say you can't have fun the way you want it? umm no.

As for controls. I prefer the idea of gesture or waggle mapping. dash up with chuck=jump. dash left/right, jump left/right. point down/crouch. The motion mapping the mind is more natural than button mapping the mind.

Anyways this question is tiring.

You're the one that doesn't get it. My claim is that "fun is in the mind of the player". I don't enjoy wii sports. My mum might and thats exactly why  "fun is in the mind of the player" so the word shouldn't be thrown around like only wii users have "fun"

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

i don't know how to explain to someone why i have fun.. it brings a smile to my face and the faces of others when we play.. i have no idea why that happens.. maybe the games are good

...

also @OP, i like how you can only come up with wii music right after you say "wii owners are the ones who claim to have fun" even though not one wii owner has played wii music, let alone said it was fun to play it.. if you can come up with an actual example, then people may be able to reply with more substance

I used wii music because I just read about how it didn't even have a scoring system on kotaku and was thinking...how is this even a game when you just wave the controller and music keeps playing? You can't really argue that the wii crowd don't use the word "fun" all the time!

i completely agree with you on the topic of "wii music is a poor excuse for a game" .. but what i'm getting at is, who, on this forum or similar forum, has said that wii music is fun since the announcement? i for one haven't seen one person claim that..

i certainly do read people saying that they have fun playing the wii.. that doesn't mean that they are claiming that every single game in the wii's library is fun, so i don't understand how you came to the conclusion that wii owners have pointed to wii music as an example of a 'fun' game

Why is the Wii the only system that gets these kinds of pointless threads?

You never see a "What's so great about a PS3?" followed by some lengthy diatribe about how "there's a PS3 in my house, it belongs to my gay uncle, but in all the high-def gay porn he has on Blu-Ray, I just don't see what makes it so great."

Do some people really hate the Wii that much? How mentally disturbed must a person be when this kind of thread seems like a good time filler? What, are the cops cracking down on the park where you stalk the elderly and you need to redirect your hatred elsewhere?

Don't like the Wii? Don't fucking play it. How bloody hard is that?

Want a better response as to why people feel the Wii is "fun" where some of the more hardcore titles don't get that? Well, there are a lot of "hardcore" games I've played that don't feel like video games. They feel like, oh, shall we say, work. You have 25 mission objectives and must move together with a group of other soldiers in a complex plan to overtake some complex. In my job, that's fucking work. You've got planning and coordination that must be followed in all these ways and all these tools and weapons at your disposal which must be used in specific ways and pretty soon I want to fucking stand up and take my authorized 15-minute break FROM ALL THE WORK.

In Super Mario Galaxy, you run around open worlds exploring nooks and crannies and solving puzzles and by god if that doesn't feel like a breath of fresh air in a world crowded with FPS missions, objectives, and every single game trying for 100% realism rather than artistic creativity. It's why I have this slight uneasiness when I see footage of Resident Evil 5. I can't help but look at that and be reminded of Gears of War or Army of Two. Resident Evil is supposed to be fun because it's survival horror and there are scares around every corner. I don't want it to feel like work, like some run-of-the-mill military/squad-based FPS title. That's why the Wii feels fun to people with it's assorted collection of sometimes lame software.

Because it feels like a game rather than work. Many of these titles don't take themselves so damn seriously. I have enough responsibilities in real life to deal with (more than any of you know), so I'm perfectly happy playing something now and then that gives me fun challenges (like Geometry Wars or Mario Galaxy), rather than a laundry list of work to do to solve missions. This isn't to say that I hate FPS games (as I'm very much looking forward to The Conduit), but to have something that's geared around simple fun that takes the edge off rather than adding to it in a virtual plain is just damn refreshing.

Seriously, don't get so freakin' defensive. It's just a stupid piece of plastic and metal....

Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it

Pristine...

The xbox 360 and the Ps3 are fun to watch...and sometime fun to play.

There're many kind of "fun" in this world. It's like a different point of view , pop or rock music ,impressionist or realismnist , true color or black&white ,love to eat rice or breads.

Do not use only yourself "fun" to judged others "fun".

Man, this is like the 15 millionth thread on the internet like this.  It's time for people to move on.  So the Wii doesn't have totally awesome games like Lair and Haze.

If this was just someone looking for an explanation on why the Wii is considered fun, that'd be one thing.  Since it's rant delivered by a Sony fanboy and was negative from the start, it reeks of obvious bitching for the sake of bitching.

Obviously "fun" is subjective. I think where the Wii succeeds is in making videogame "fun" more accessible to a wider audience.

Plus the Wii has become more of a social gaming console than anything previous to it. A lot of people prefer this type of "fun" to traditional video games.

Who has said that the ONLY way to have fun is the wii? Just b/c someone says it's fun doesn't mean that other games/systems aren't.

So I guess to answer your question, your idea of fun is playing a game alone in your basement, some other peoples idea of fun is playing a game with their family in the living room. Just b/c you don't think the wii is fun doesn't mean it isn't for other people, just like if they don't think playing LoD alone in the basement isn't fun, doesn't mean it isn't for you.

Totally agree. I'm someone who thinks the Wii is fun, but from what I've seen of it Wii Music looks awful. It's the first 'game' that really does deserve the title non-game as it has no goal and nothing to achieve. From what I understand you don't even control it and you get the same outcome whatever buttons you press. Mini-games collections may not be your idea of a good game, but they have a goal and a purpose. The same goes for Wii Fit and other Wii-type games. I find things like that fun because they're quick and easy to play and you can reach the goal quickly. I hate RPGs, the main reason being that I don't have the attention span to reach the end-goal. I have fun when I achieve a goal and so the Wii is generally going to be more fun for someone like me. It also probably explains why my favourite genres are racing and fighting as they incorporate lots of quick goals. I expect more people refer to the Wii as fun because in modern society most people have short attention spans, especially when it comes to entertainment. Achieving something NOW is fun for most.
