Forums - Gaming Discussion - Whats so "fun" about the wii?

@happy squirrel - That´s the thing, I´m like Pristine20. I´d rather play COD4 than Wii Sports (not that I don´t like the Wii or have anything against it).

And not only that, I lke the "boring" tutorials. I like complicated control schemes. Having to press the left trigger to aim from the hip and fire with the right trigger.

As I grew up controllers become more complex gradually, so I didn´t have much trouble adjusting to it.

So, it doesn´t take me hours to enjoy such games. I enjoy it from the beginning. You feel differently. That´s fine. The way I like it isn´t easy for new gamers. That´s true. But not everything should be.

There should be a place in the market for newcomers and "veteran" gamers like me and Pristine20 and neither should be considered better or worst in terms of fun.

I have fun playing my complex games and you have fun playing your Wii games. Great for both of us.

I think it's just the games that are fun. Mario Kart Wii is phenomenal, Smash Brothers, of course, is fantastic, Galaxy is very, very fun and there are quite a few good third party games.

Owning both games, I'd say that Metroid Prime 3 is a better shooter than Halo 3 hands down. It gets a respectable frame rate (60fps) unlikely Halo 3, it doesn't aim for you, the enemies are far more difficult and it's overall a lot more fun.

So, is someone telling you that you are not having fun?

If so, then that's their problem. Don't let anyone dictate what is fun to you.

And on that note. I find the Wii fun. So buzz off. I also find it more enjoyable to actually be in the company of others, as opposed to playing with them over online.  I love both, just prefer to actually be around the people I like.

Well, I have played videogames since I first got the Collecovision in the early 80s and that is one of the main reasons I find the more "Complicated" games boring ... How many times do I really have to do a tutorial where some "Scientist" puts me through some meanial test to see if I can crouch through a tunnel or jump over a log? "Now, climb up that ladder ..."

The fact of the matter is you can start playing many Wii games (even the complicated "Core" games) and are instantly put into the "Action" of the game, and it is enjoyable right at the start ...

PS3/360 are indeed great 'fun' for gamers.

Wii is 'fun' for anyone even if they have never played a video game before.

Don't let the Nintendo fanboys define what is fun.

You can have fun playing Wii Sports, World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, Halo, Red Steel, Wii Play, or any game.

The whole concept behind a videogame is an interactive, video-based game that produces fun.

Fun might be re-inacting yourself as a soldier in a huge, epic battle, or fighting monsters in a great, well-storied fantasy land. It might be in playing virtual tennis, or a golfing game.

Fun doesn't mean gameplay over technology. The best RPG of all time, as cited by most VGC-ers, and elsewher, Chono Trigger (and/or Final Fantasy VII, depending on who you ask) both used groundbreaking technology, and gameplay elements when they came out. So did Mario, Mario 64, and Wii Sports.

For myself, I will take a well-writen good RPG over most other genres, as I like to feel emotion, and get involved in the characters that I play as, rather than a quick, stupid game of . I've always been a fan of long, epic games, because that is what is fun for me. Monopoly might be fun to you, but not to me. Risk or Axis & Allies is more of my type of board game. To each his own. When you have someone say "only this is fun" or "because if has tons of graphics, it's not fun" - Wasn't Star Wars a fun movie to watch in the early 1970's? All of those superb top-notch graphics? It was amazing to see, even in the 90s as a kid for me. Likewise, seeing the Matrix, and the new filming techniqes the director(s) and staff used was groundbreaking, and "fun" for me because I like action and kung-fu movies.

So anyone that says that technology over gameplay isn't fun needs to buy an Atari 2600 then, seriously.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Ok, I´m not disputing that. What I ´m saying is that I don´t mind having to do a tutorial where some "Scientist" puts me through some meanial test to see if I can crouch through a tunnel or jump over a log. I like it. It means there is a progress of difficulty. Means there are different things I can do, instead of just jumping or shooting. There is some variation.

I have no problem with you prefering that. You can say that you kind of game gets to the meat of the acton faster than my kind. But to say that youris is better or funner (jk :D, more fun) than mine is subjective.

You play your way, I play mine. Great for both of us

The "fun" means gameplay over technology. If you value technology (graphics, sound, cinematics, online, Blu-ray, Achievements, etc., etc.) over gameplay polish and quality then you are advised to own an Xbox 360 or PS3. If you favour gameplay quality, get a Wii.

Neither route is better - the use of the word "fun" instead of "focus on gamplay" is a marketing tool, not a statement of fact.

If you can honestly say you don't like Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and LoZ: Twilight Princess, then the Wii is not for you. Likewise, if I don't like Halo, Call of Duty, FF13, MGS4, Gears of War or similar, I can conclude the PS3/360 are not for me.

I'm currently playing "Legend of Dragoon", a ps1 game, would you consider that technologically advanced? Gameplay quality? Exactly what does that mean?

It's fun because it's fresh and tries to get you into the game more (that whole immersion thing).
