I still own a playstation 2, so it's not a big issue for me.

Backward compatibility for PS1 games is though, because for some reason my PS2 can't play PS1 discs (even ones with no scratches what so ever).
I would send it to sony, but it's out of warranty and I don't plan to pay to play 1 game (FF8) and I don't trust the seedy guys at the local "mod/upgrade" shop to repair my console.

So now I'm sitting here with FF7 in one hand (that works, and that I don't want to play) and FF8 in the other (I do want to play but it's not supported by the 40gb PS3 according to the Sony website).

I'm going to say yes though, because it means I can't sell my PS2.

All versions of PS3's play PS1 games.

The word is that the new 80gigs won't. It was reported a few days ago.

On Topic:

BC for the PS3 doesn't matter to me because I don't have many of my old PS2 or PS1 games. I would like to have it but it's not a deal breaker. I feel the PS3 should be bought for PS3 games....or even Blu-Ray but that's it.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

I want to answer anyway, even if you don't count this. You didn't forbid doing this, so...

I own the 60 GB model and I find PS2 compatibility very important to me. I play on an old SDTV and it has only one SCART plug so I can't keep my PS2 connected at the same time as PS3. It's also pretty annoying to mess with the cables (even if there are only two) so I'd really prefer using only one console.  Luckily for my, almost all of my PS2 games work perfectly (well, I haven't tested them all but most of the ones I've tested work); still, there are problems with a few (only minor issues, though).

As for what comes to PS1 games... Apparently they all work (except for some odd exceptions that didn't work even on my PS2) so it's not a big deal. Well, Metal Gear Solid: Special Missions doesn't work but I think that's only because it needs to check if I have MGS1.

No.

I do no use my 60 Gig machine for PS2 disks because of the disk thrashing (I like Castlevania PS2 a lot!!)

If SONY implemented a feature like the 360 has for copying the entire DVD to the HDD, that would be fantastic.
I doubt they will do this, as BC seems to be a thing of the past...

Yes. I already have about 5 systems fighting for my TV connections at any given time... I don't need 6.

Boycotting the following:

1. Yoshi: He ate my car and spit out a toaster.

2. Igglybuff: Totally false advertisement. You can have as many as you like they don't buff nothing.

3. the Terms Hardcore/Softcore... We're talking Video Games. Not Porn.

4. The term Casual as relates to Gamers: We make them sound like outsider's that happen to play games.  If that were the case they'd own a PS3.

5. Donuts.... Beacause I drink Beer...... and the biggest fan of Donuts hates Beer.

6. Boycotts: Their so lame.

Sides there is only about 4-5 games I would buy right now.... and 2 of them is not even out yet. So I'd need the additional games from PS2 to keep it from collecting dust.

SO it's been all day.

The data is now closed.

As you can see in the O.P. it's an exact draw.

Weird.

It did at first, as I bought day 1 and had GOW2 to beat, but now I really dont care enough about it. Even if I didnt have BC in my console I would just use my PS2. Frankly I dont need it anymore and with all the great PSN and PS3 titles with a few classic PS1 titles you dont need PS2 BC.

Yes it was a good reason I was thinking of getting the PS3....but know not as sure...

Former something....

I own a 60gb ps3.

Because my ps2 collection is not very good (I was poor that generation) I have barely used the ps2 BC.  I use the ps1 BC far more often as I have a nice collection of games (ps1 BC is in every single ps3).  In fact the only times I have used the ps2 BC is to finish my playthrough of ffXII and play through the entirety of the mgs series prior to mgs4s release.

so my vote is for does not matter.

Yes it is. I have an Xbox 360 and an original Playstation (other consoles 2 btw). Anyway if I got a PS3 I would like bc for PS2 games I might want to purchase.
