Forums - Sony Discussion - Potential/Current PS3 owners: Does b/c matter to you?

It was a nice feature back in Q1 2007 when I bought one, simply because there really weren't any PS3 titles that I felt compelled to play initially. Buying a console without buying any games sounds pointless, but I was more interested in the Blu-Ray player, knowing that the good games would come later (First Year Rule of consoles).

That was roughly until Q3 2007 when HS and holiday season releases began to unload and the PS3 game drought ended.

Considering the current library of PS3 games in addition to all the works in progress, there is no need for me to buy any more PS2 games.

As for the 50+ PS2 titles I already have and occasionally play (MGS Essential Collection), BC is nice to have, but until Sony stops making PS2s, hardly anything I consider essential. My first year PS2 still works fine, even if it is packed away.

If I'm patient, the next PS3 I buy will be a reduced component/reduced cost/reduced power consumption model (PSThree), but I'd be surprised to see one before 2010 (four years after the debut of the PS3). BC won't matter to me by then.

If I'm impatient, I'll buy a reduced CPU/GPU die model that uses less power and runs cooler, but is still a big, black shiny obelisk of plastic.

Without BC.

The PS3 library only keeps growing.

Yep, PS2's are notoriously unreliable and as time goes on it'll be harder and harder to get a good working PS2.

I still play an Atari 7600... the chances of my PS2 working in the 12th generation seems unlikely... and the chances of being able to find a new one for a cheap price is equally as unlikely outside of garage sale hunting or something.

Also it helps because... well I still play my Atari and every other system i own. It's a pain switching them, one of the best parts of getting my first PS2 was i could give my PS1 away.

Yes it's very important to me.

If the PS3 didn't have some sort of BC I wouldn't have bought one period. If mine breaks and there is no option for me to turn to I won't purchase another until there is.  I have about 5x the number of PS2 games as I have PS3 ones.

I know people saying there is the option of buying both consoles but to be frank the PS2 hardware is pretty unreliable and the chances of a model still working 10 years down the road isn't very promising.  As long as Sony stays loyal to their promise to keep BC a priority then I will continue to buy their products.  That's why their backtracking has been so frustrating to me this gen.

Yes its very important to me and the removal of BC (in EU for me) has totally reduced the PS3's appeal for me.

Reason: My PS2 is in my home country but Im in the UK for good. I still need to play SotC and God of War 2, not to mention the old classics which I like to pick up again! I am much more likely to pick up a PS2 than PS3 at the moment.

I'm off ps2 games... I haven't played one in over a year. I thought BC was important, but I'd rather play ps3 games; besides I have my ps2 and the 60gig.

I use BC a little bit, I would for sure try to get a PS3 that had it if I didn't already, but I would have just kept my PS2 instead of pawning it for like $40 if I had to buy a non BC PS3.

last ps2 titles i bought was a year ago, ff12 and shadow of the colossus.

since then i havent bothered with ps2 titles.

so my answer is no

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

Yes, I was hoping to sell my PS2. =\

yes for me it does. since ps2 games are getting cheaper now there were afew games that i was hoping to go back and play now that i can get them on the cheap since i missed them 1st time around. I have a 40gig ps3 with no bc and its annoying as hell.

Not only that but i've had 2 ps2's, both which had their lives ended, the first one stopped working for some reason and was 'unrepairable', and the 2nd one my kid cousin took something heavy to it. so now i'm stuck borrowing some1 elses ps2. would of been alot easier and happier with b/c

Unless your BC PS3 bites it. ::knock on wood::
But then reliability has not been an issue for the PS3.

Still, I have to consider a future without the early run 60GB I bought since it's already seen more run time in hours than my 8 year old PS2 (initial run model, still working like new) because of Folding and all the media playback it's used for.

I have no problems with buying a PSThree model in a smaller package in a couple years that has fewer components (including the EE and GS chips), no BC, smaller die CPU/GPU, generates less heat and uses less power, even if it's not as complete as the "fully loaded" 60GB that supposedly cost Sony over $800 to manufacture.

Assuming that ever breaks, in two years, if the PS2 is still being made, or when the announcement to end production is made (not for another two years at the least), I'll buy another one to keep if I ever want to play any of my old PS2 games in addition to that second PS3, which will probably end up costing $300-400 combined.
