Forums - Sony Discussion - Goodbye Backwards Compatibility Forever (PS3)

If you check the link it says it!

The link says it in the news article by Gamespot...not exactly Sony is it. No PS1 BC would defeate the purpose of one of the main functions of the PS3/PSP compatability and mean that all those scheduled 'classics' that have appeared recent and going to appear would be redundant.

I'll take my gut feeling that the news article is wrong over Gamespot.

Hmm, pie.

Around the Network

The 40GB model DOES play PS1 titles, henceforth the article is wrong on that account. The Answer was "the 80gb model is the 40gb one with a bigger HDD"
PS1 BC is handled fully via software, not via hardware.

In the short run this is going to piss off a lot of people who truly want BC or provide fodder for people who feign interest in buying a PS3 and now won't because of the loss of BC. In reality, (and as much as I hate to admit it) since Sony has already started down the road of losing BC, they should do what they are doing and finish it off. One SKU would get things moving back toward where they should be. If Sony moves to one SKU and one SKU ONLY on a world-wide basis (other than bundles or colors and such), they will join Nintendo. That will leave only MS with a 3-SKU lineup going forward. That would certainly put pressure on MS to consolidate with one SKU as well and would be beneficial to all gamers and developers going forward.

I second that. I think Sony is fine with just one Sku.

Well at the moment it's the new 80GB going to America, the 40GB in PAL territories and Japan has the 40GB and the old 80GB (with BC) right?

How come they stopped PS1 BC as well? I would have thought the chipsets for it cost next to nothing.

Japan never got the 80Gb. Everywhere only has 40Gb now except for NA which has limited supplies of 80Gb too.

As pointed out already, the article was wrong. PS1 is fully emulated in software.

Still a bad move.
Having BC on the PS3 would allow them to sell their huge catalog of PS2 games on the Playstation store and prolong the life of some of those titles ( if only the first party titles to allow them to generate more cash).

Right now as time pass old PS2 titles are getting harder and harder to find except as used games and Sony receives no money from used games sales...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !
