Forums - Sony Discussion - Goodbye Backwards Compatibility Forever (PS3)

40gb HD was getting expensive so they switched to 80gb. But why they didn't drop the price of 40gb? I think they know unlike 360 20gb they will clear 40gb without price drop.

In the short run this is going to piss off a lot of people who truly want BC or provide fodder for people who feign interest in buying a PS3 and now won't because of the loss of BC. In reality, (and as much as I hate to admit it) since Sony has already started down the road of losing BC, they should do what they are doing and finish it off. One SKU would get things moving back toward where they should be. If Sony moves to one SKU and one SKU ONLY on a world-wide basis (other than bundles or colors and such), they will join Nintendo. That will leave only MS with a 3-SKU lineup going forward. That would certainly put pressure on MS to consolidate with one SKU as well and would be beneficial to all gamers and developers going forward.

I hate trolls.

Systems I currently own:  360, PS3, Wii, DS Lite (2)
Systems I've owned: PS2, PS1, Dreamcast, Saturn, 3DO, Genesis, Gamecube, N64, SNES, NES, GBA, GB, C64, Amiga, Atari 2600 and 5200, Sega Game Gear, Vectrex, Intellivision, Pong.  Yes, Pong.

I second that. I think Sony is fine with just one Sku.

How long until they replace the 80GB with a 120GB that doesn't play PS3 games?

Hopefully after you stop trolling.

Or, right after Nintendo releases a system that plays DVDs and CDs and perhaps has some storage capability.

Lol... It was just a joke, but I agree I probably shouldn't have made it.

I have CD player that I hardly use under my TV, not point having one connected to my TV too. Oddly enough I don't own a standard DVD player. There is one downstairs and my laptop plays them of course, but I never bought one myself because I don't really care and I only have about 5 DVDs (well 15ish, but I was counting things as sets, and most DVDs come in pairs or more)

I think the main problem is that Sony promised Backward compatibility, it was part of their "philosophy" with the "Playstation Brand" Nintendo never promised DVD and and never said anything about CD functionality.

Of course most Wii fans would agree with you for your last point, at the moment there is nothing I want to purchase but as soon as a Wiiware game releases I want I will have to do some shuffling, which is annoying.

Well at the moment it's the new 80GB going to America, the 40GB in PAL territories and Japan has the 40GB and the old 80GB (with BC) right?

How come they stopped PS1 BC as well? I would have thought the chipsets for it cost next to nothing.

I guess I don't care about BC because I don't want to play those older less graphically impressive games. Just like I don't bother with VHS or cassette tapes. They just don't give me the enjoyment they used to.

With that said its always a nice feature to have, just in case.

I understand why they are doing it.... But I also understand that if you have a library of PS2/Really Expensive CD Player Games that you still play, you now have to switch back and forth between two systems. Also alot of people would argue it's a big deal since BC actually adds to the system library. Also if you were interested in say MGS4 and maybe another game that won't be out for a few month's you can play the classics(once again) without switching systems.

Boycotting the following:

1. Yoshi: He ate my car and spit out a toaster.

2. Igglybuff: Totally false advertisement. You can have as many as you like they don't buff nothing.

3. the Terms Hardcore/Softcore... We're talking Video Games. Not Porn.

4. The term Casual as relates to Gamers: We make them sound like outsider's that happen to play games.  If that were the case they'd own a PS3.

5. Donuts.... Beacause I drink Beer...... and the biggest fan of Donuts hates Beer.

6. Boycotts: Their so lame.

if you want BC, go buy an 80gig now. Or better yet, you should have bought the NA 60gig which has 100% emulation. That's the one i have. i've only played 1 PS2 game on it ever, and that was because a friend wanted to play it because he was good at it. The game was Star Wars Battlefront 2. that's all i ever played from a PS2 on it.

Plus, there are enough good 3rd and 1st party games available on the PS3. but i guess this varies from person to person.

u guys need to relax avout backwards compatibilty, if u like playin ur ps2 keep it plugged in instead of using the ps3. Anyway its not like its that much better to play ps2 games on the ps3

PLAYSTATION®3 is the future.....NOW.......B_E_L_I_E_V_E

Consoles owned: Game Cube, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS, PSP, PS1, PS2, PS3.

My prediction: NATAL WILL NOT help 360 sales. Maybe a 50-100k boost week 1, then a 30-70 k boost week 2, and back to the norm again after 3-5 weeks.
