Animal Crossing is one of the most casual videogame series ever created in my opinion.

You can run around! Fish! Find Bugs! Talk to animals! Fill a house with stuff!

I find it a good diversion for a half hour at a time, but I can never get into it enough for an extended play.

What about Animal Crossing makes it hardcore?

I hope I didn't allude to it being 'hardcore'. I'm thinking about getting it mostly for my kids to socialize with friends + it will come with the mic for free.

It yells at you for not saving before you turn off.

It guilt trips you for not playing enough.

You can get random animal stalkers.

You can hit people with shovels.


Now if that ain't hardcore what is? :)

There's nothing particularly snobcore about it. But it has a very wide appeal, which includes a lot of traditional gamers, so perhaps that's what the statements are based on? (I'm honestly not sure).

Well, it's a "core" game. It appeals to people ages 5-20, male and female, which is the "core." This group has always played games. AC was a big hit on Gamecube.

It doesn't appeal to the "hardcore," no. The "hardcore" are the teenage boys who have a sense of entitlement because gaming companies have promoted them as the primary audience.

Casual Fallacy. I could tell you Guitar Hero is a casual game, but Hardcore love it, so it's not casual then. Animal Crossing can be loved by anybody, so most hardcore don't consider it casual. It's each one gaming habits that defines this, not the game.
