Hddvd hardware from Q1 to Q2 +37%

Hddvd software from Q1 to Q2 +20%

Blu ray hardware from Q1 to Q2 -27%

Blu-ray software from Q1 to Q2 -5%

Looks to me like Blu ray is dying not Hddvd.

you do know the growth is not overall, so relative to total numbers BD still gained overall marketshare from Q1 to Q2....also, this doesnt count the PS3 in BD hardware since it would help the numbers, we are only allowed to use the PS3 when it lowers BD attach rates, didnt you get that memo from HD DVD Association?

So yes, these numbers tell us that HD DVD gained percentages of sales from a horrible Q1, but in the actual analysis they lost marketshare STILL, so its hardly a day to sound the trumpet or alarm especially with a wicked Fall BD exlusive lineup

I don't think HD DVD or Blu-Ray are doing anything great right now. The players are still too expensive, the media is too expensive, and the average consumer doesn't see the value yet. They provide a better experience, but, most people are looking and saying "not worth my hard earned dollars".

Not much can be read into and numbers until the mass market starts buying in.

I bet the winner will be the companies that sell HD DVD / Blu-Ray combo devices.

LG has their combo drives down to $400 (likely released this fall), with 6X blu-ray burning for $500 (but not HD-DVD burning yet).

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Those figures are from neilson, npd, and the studios themselves they are for set top players only. What these numbers show is that people are actually buying HD players 180k unlike BR players 105k. The format nuetral Paramount found that only about 22% of PS3 owners buy BR regularly so people buying players will decide the outcome not the PS3. Hd players have been selling on average of 10k "not encluding 360 addon" a week over the last 2 months and within a couple of months you will be able to get an HD player for under $200 and the 360 addon will be less than $130 so you can bet they will start outselling the PS3 & BR players which is selling around 25k a week combined. Also Hd lineup has more releases this fall and will be just as good as BR and most of those BR exclusives you will be able to import.

Pay-per-view cable has been around since VHS VCR's. It hasn't exactly taken over the world. Also, the article you, FishyJoe, posted yesterday about some roundtable with a bunch of movie studio execs also states that they don't see movie downloads taking off in the next five or even ten years. I personally don't see movie downloads taking off until they can resolve their DRM issues. One of the reasons studios like these new optical formats is because they have put some nice DRM into them.

Anyway, it just seems like a lot of sour grapes in here, that's all. The format, HD-DVD, some of you are rooting for (for not much good reason, I might add) is going to lose. Therefore, some of you are declaring that you will not join in the blue optical world at all and will even root for the ridiculous (e.g., HVD) instead.

Thanks for pointing that out about pay-per-view, I don't understand this as an argument, it's NEVER been popular enough. Maybe broadband services will improve to be a more viable option, but, as I've said b4, humans like collections and movie studios like encryption software.

@nathantay, only 22% of PS3 owners buy BDs??? so then just add another 831,600 BD players to the hardware lists and compare BD to HDDVD. And you are 100% full of shit, as they DO enclude? include the HDDVD add on into all HDDVD hardware lists.

"and most of those BR? BD releases you will be able to import"   WTF does that even mean? Do you mean rip? copy? import to another country b/c they removed regional coding for this very reason? what exactly is your argument? maybe you should just walk away from this topic.... at least until you get your facts straight...................

Dammit, I just came to this thread to ask who plans on picking up 300 next week and what format your getting it in, DVD included? Anyone? I guess Your Mother you'll be straeming in over HD cable, oh wait, nevermind :p

EDIT: I'm picking it up Tuesday at 12:01 at Wally World in blu-ray.

You're assuming that 3.6 million PS3 owners ALL use BluRay and all have the HD equipment needed to take advantage of it. And in BluRay vs HDDVD, porn is very relevant, it helped shape VHS in the background while Sony wondered why it's superiour Betamax format continued to be put aside.

The fact that it's online is irrelevant, or is it? I'm having fun downloading my 720p BluRay rips of films...

You idiots are unnerving me. "Debbie Does Dallas... Again" is coming to BD, I've already got it ordered, and Sony has no plans to block other BD production companies from making adult BDs.

And ACTUALLY it's more complicated than "p0rn decided the VHS vs Betamax" no, no, no, no, no, you do not understand what actually happened(how old are you anyways?) Sony's f&ck up with betamax was that they made it proprietary hardware, and would not share the tech with anyone else, meaning only they could build and sale the players and tapes. Since it's "always" been their policy to not sell adult material that's why this played a factor, but the majority was a TOTAL lack of studio support b/c of the proprietary crap they pulled.

Also, thanks you asshole pirater, your the reason why my stuff costs more than is necessary, though I think your just a liar at this point anyways.

831,600 is not 22%of 1.62m. As of June Hd stand alone players at 180k 360 addon is at 160k. Most Br exclusives are released in other countries by other companies so movies like The Prestige, T2, 3 Rambo flicks, both Underworlds, Silent Hill and many others have or will be released and you can import them because HD is region free so it looks like you need to get your facts straight. Also go to valueelectronics.com you can pick up an HD player for $200 new with free hdmi cable, free shipping, and you also get the 5 free movies from Toshiba.

Ooh... first, retro gaming, now retro porn!

@nathantay, i used the % you posted, was it for US only? i didn't notice that, but do you assume that no one else in the world watches BD on their PS3? Most BD exclusives? Like who? Sony pictures? HAH..... Disney? Paramount? These are "exclusives"..... the other companies are neutral, but you still have Universal, which is your ONLY card left.

@your mother, it's a new one ;) not retro, but a funny idea......... smartass =p

So... this is a new Debbie movie? With a new Debbie, I hope - the original Debbie should be pretty old these days (not to mention all that mileage)...
