Forums - Sony Discussion - the Blu-ray thread, will go on untill hddvds death.

Problem is, what happens when PS3 sales become more stagnant than they already are?

Come on, the only reason BluRay is whopping HDDVD right now IS the PS3. With the cheaper price tag and the porn industry on it's side, HDDVD could still come back in time...

No, it can't.  Even during the $299 promotion for one of the Toshiba players, Toshiba lowered its expectations for the year from 1.5 million to 1 million.  Considering that they have only sold 180,000 in 14 months, HD-DVD's lifespan, even that benchmark is pretty unrealistic.

Porn is irrelevant.  At least 95% of porn nowadays is online.  End of story.  This argument is just a red herring that people continue to bring up.

Blu-Ray player prices are dropping right alongside the price of HD-DVD players.  The price advantage is slowly but surely dissapearing, unless Toshiba just starts giving the things away.

Here is how it breaks down

 3.6 million PS3's and 100,000 Blu-Ray standalones

vs.

180,000 HD-DVD standalones along with 200,000 or so Xbox 360 add-ons

=

HD-DVD's ultimate defeat.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

You're assuming that 3.6 million PS3 owners ALL use BluRay and all have the HD equipment needed to take advantage of it. And in BluRay vs HDDVD, porn is very relevant, it helped shape VHS in the background while Sony wondered why it's superiour Betamax format continued to be put aside.

The fact that it's online is irrelevant, or is it? I'm having fun downloading my 720p BluRay rips of films...

Yeah, BD has an almost 4:1 sales over HDDVD this week b/c promotions have been going great.

Anyway, here are this past week's stats:
http://www.dvdempire.com/Content/Features/hidef_wars.asp?view=1&userid=99365843813776

You do realize that those sales figures are for dvdempire only and maybe acount for 5% of the total market.

I don't know why any HD-DVD supporters are complaining about the 5 free Blu-Ray promotion. The HD-DVD group did the same thing. Even during that promotion, Blu-Ray steadily outsold HD-DVD every week. HD-DVD has only come close to winning one week since the beginning of the year, and that was the week Smokin' Aces came out. One or two weeks ago, HD-DVD literally had 15 more releases than Blu-Ray (Blu-Ray had about 2), and Blu-Ray STILL managed to outsell HD-DVD. This was after the Blockbuster announcement, which has eroded some of HD-DVD's support. Go check the Nielsen Home Media Magazine if you want to verify the numbers I gave. The YTD sales ratio is 67% Blu-Ray and 33% HD-DVD. Pretty consistent trend if you ask me.

HD-DVD is not dead, but it is dying, and it will continue to die. Anyone who still has their money on HD-DVD is either an idiot, a desperate early adopter, or unaware of Blu-Ray's much stronger hand against HD-DVD.

looks like the wii vs ps3 for me.

"So, Ps3 is not dead, but it is dying, and it will continue to die. Anyone who still has their money on ps3 is either an idiot, a desperate early adopter, or unaware of Wii's much stronger hand against ps3."

Sounds fair.

Wrong, if the PS3 had only 1 studio exclusive to them and that exclusive publisher was mediocre at best and hadnt released more than a handful of 1 million sellers (or 100 million gross box office) in the last couple of years.....lets say EIDOS Interactive, and then lets say that EVERY other studio released on the Wii, 360 and PS3, so we would have Lair, Halo, Heavenly Sword, MGS4, FF, Little Big Planet, R&C, Uncharted etc all cross console available on both systems.......then and only then could we draw an accurate compariosn to HD DVD.

EDIT: actually itd be even worse, because since Disney and Sony and Fox (eventually thos idiots) Lionsgate and BVHE and Stars etc. ONLY release on BD, that would mean games like FF, MGS4, DMC, UT, Gears of War, Haze, RB6, Oblivion would all be exclusive Wii or 360 titles not available on the PS3.

umm.. theres porn on both formats which makes that a totally pointless thing to say.

Also the price tag isnt that much cheaper. Not with 3rd gen Blu-ray palyers coming.

Oh fyi, its spelled Blu-ray, every other spelling is incorrect.

For your PS3 sales going stagnent, lol is what I say. All 3 Walmarts and the 2 CCs in my area are sold out. Thats stagnent?

Well they're not selling at all in this part of England, despite the unofficial price cuts from stores to £400 and the extras thrown in as bundles, no one here gives a crap about the PS3. One store stopped selling them altogether because they simply couldn't be shifted.

Blu-ray needs the PS3, if the PS3 doesn't sell, Blu-ray takes the hit as well. It's had a huge boost since the launch but it's eventually going to slow down as less PS3's get sold on a weekly basis.

I certainly wouldn't call PS3 sales 'blistering'...

Okay, i know this might be tough for you, but step back and look OBJECTIVELY AT THIS. Price drop for the future and now starting in august games will start rolling out.....do you seriously believe that we have yet to see the worst of PS3 sales? Seriously man. $600 for nothing but resistance and motorstorm for 6 months and you somehow think getting Home, a $100 price cut, Lair, Heavenly Sword, HSG, UT3, Haze, R&C, Uncharted, Folksoul, Warhawk we are going to see the PS3 get "more stagnant".........

I am by no means predicting a revolution or even anythign close, but to assume sales will get WORSE is, im sorry, complete stupidity

Yeah, it's probably easy to have great BR "sales" when you're throwing them around in all directions.

promotions dont count towards sales unless its rung up in store and given for free and HD DVD has had this same promotion for the last 3 months, not to mention 2 free movies (that counted toward sales) with the purchase of the matrix set as well....so for a $250 player in june and the $70 matrix set you got The player, The Matrix set (3 movies) plus 2 of you choice from the store (which counted toward sales) and then 5 free mail in movies.....so thats be 10 movies and the player for $330.........but i see that had little effect on the sales ratio....way to comment on something you know nothing about, just because you hate the PS3 and Sony doesnt mean you know diddly abouteverything Sony does, as proven by your post.

Any sources for that? I made a pretty generic claim, but yours is quite specific, so go ahead and prove it.

Its common knowledge that promotions are paid for by teh promoting group in this case the BDA or HD DVD Association, its how pormotions work, if you mail away for such a sale it is not counted as a sold disc its promotional, if you get 2 free discs with the purchase of a movie (Matrix) and its rung up at teh counter that ring up sends the data to information colection that the disc has passed the counter and is marked sold even though they are rebating the cost immediately.

Like i said, if you dont know what youre talking about just pass along and dont comment, some of you see sony or Blu Ray and just put your foot in your mouth and then when someone puts you in your place you stomp your foot and demand links, maybe you should do some research before you run your mouth off, i dont owe you any links for your ignorance or laziness.

What am i supposed to prove that the Matrix was being old over fathers day with 2 free discs and a HDA2 price drop? Am i supposed to show you links for something that is COMMON FREAKIN KNOWLEDGE to anyone who has remotely followed BDA or HDDVD? Just because you come here smelling something positive for Sony dont get on your high horse and demand info to be fed to you for your ignorance of not knowing what teh f*ck youre talking about when you start making condescending comments that arent true at all about promotional sales counting towards nielson.

I'd still like to see some proof, but I'll accept your correction. Anyway, there are other promotions besides the one you've mentioned. For example, the latest Amazon promotion for the PS3 will surely count for Blu-Ray sales. When I made my original post I was thinking about all of that, not the 5-disc promotion specifically.
