And I thought you were NOT sarcastic...

Heh.  Before you go off all cultured again at least capitalize Dostoevski and spell it right (also, according to Wikipedia, sometimes transliterated Dostoyevsky, Dostoievsky, Dostojevskij or Dostoevski).  Or do you mean the guy that created Tetris?

As silly as the people screaming that Nintendo are destroying the industry or abandoning their fans sound, there was barely anything in the conference aimed for people who've been playing for more than a few years. GTA DS was the only major new announcement, and even that's very likely to be crap.

Then again, they announced Brawl as a suprised after all their other conferences a few years ago. There's still probably going to be something interesting announced... sooner or later.

I really want my 30 minutes back, though.

To a certain extent, I think Nintendo believes that their "Media Breifing" is a good opportunity to target people who aren't "Core" gamers because it is (potentially) the only part of E3 which gets a lot of mainstream media outlets attention ... Showing off a game (like Brawl) at a different event or behind closed doors will still get a ton of attention from the dedicated gaming press which will get the attention of "Core" gamers.

This is probably what is going to happen anyways, we know that there is a few tittles coming in, and probably the best for the company now is show off game with mass market appealing, rather than focus on games that probably will have less impact right now (After the FF story)...

Weren't you the guy who was comparing Metal Gear Solid to high art in another thread?

If so, then lol.

Also, I doubt you've ever read any Dostoyevsky (seeing as you can't even spell the guy's name corrently) outside of a battered copy of "Crime and Punishment" in your high school English class that you slogged through against your will, but like to pull out every once in a while on the Internet to show how well-read you supposedly are. Seriously, stop with the teenage pseudo-intellectual crap.

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

I'm sickened by Nintendo's presentation thus far and am even more worried for our industry's future.

All of Nintendo's video's and commentary focused on the aspect of "fun" and enjoyment of players who were shown forcing smiles to demonstrate their joy.

It is this obsessive focus on throwaway entertainment and fun that is destroying the possible artistic merits of videogames. No videogame showed at Nintendo's E3 thus far boasted a deep though provoking storyline or an inspiring art-design or emotional value. They were merely hollow games for pick and play entertainment. Nothing deeper, nothing you can take anything more valuable away from.

Sure the movie industry is driven by throaway entertainment as well but it still has it's Immar Bergmans and others who create thought provoking, artisticly inspired pieces. Nintendo's presentation did not show any commitment to anything comparable in videogames.

LOL! Wait a second.......Jaffe?

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Sorry, but.. If i'm going to play games, I want to have fun. I don't really care about having some rich emotional experience where I feel like I'm watching a movie or reading a book. I want to play for 15, 30 minutes to an hour tops then stop.. and I'm glad Nintendo is focusing on that kinda thing. That's just what I like, and there are other platform choices or games you can focus on if you prefer something more in depth.

Yes, how dare you people enjoy life! Life is to be nothing but misery and introspection. You are not allowed to have friends, play games with each other, and have fun.

You've made it quite clear already how uncultured you are. You have a problem with people wanting something in videogames that we already have in other forms of creation: art and relevance.

Exactly! Video Games aren't about fun, they're about appealing to a mythical standard set aside just for the self-claimed intellectual minority! Curse you Nintendo! How dare you make Video Games that appeal to people other than those who sit around frat lounges playing Halo and Gears of War, work two jobs to feed their World of Warcraft addiction, play Grand Theft Auto like its a religion or view MGS2 as not just a game, but a life changing experience.

A number of people have called MGS2 a life changing experience, including James Howell who if you have read his articles you know is an extremely intelligent and articulate person, well above the average population.

Okay, after the first one, I was just going to let it pass, but...

It's Dostoyevski or Dostoevsky, not Dovstoyevski (several spellings are allowed because the name is originally in the Russian alphabet, but the spelling you've chosen is not among them).

It's Ingmar, not Immar Bergman.

Not particularly picky about these things usually, but since the entire purpose of your posts was to impress upon us the intellectual grandeur that these artists (and you, their purveyor) possess, the irony was too thick to ignore.

I think it is the focus on these blockbusters that are destroying the industry. They have large budgets and have huge risks of flopping. Profit margin is lower as well. IMO games are about fun. Large games can be fun as well as pick up and play. But that is the point of games. Fun. When you get away from this the entire industry suffers.

Movies can be cultured, they are a totally different medium. Books as well. I like a good read and I like deep movies. I also like movies that are not considered art though. And yes I have read Dostoyevsky. Have you? When I look at your myspace it makes it seem like all your new webpage will be about is games and sex. How is that high art form?
