Just give me something new instead of the MS-style "Me too" conference.

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

Don't overplay FF13. While Sony won't be able to match the shock value, maybe they have another LBP sized game to show off.

If a game like LBP sells 3M copies, and really diversifies the game lineup, that more than equals the damage of losing exclusivity on FF13, which is only going to sell about 3M copies on 360. So if Sony just shows off another really original, potential breakout hit like that, they've matched FF13 in my book, in every category except shock.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Nothing, even a FFVII remake would make some people feel insecure about another port to the 360, really, right now there is nothing to do just move on...

Sony knew this was coming, so you have to think they have something planed. No clue what it could be.

I agree, this could make for a great E3.

This really is a breath of reason, I suppose. The actual number of extra 360s this sells plus the number of sales of PS3s to 360 owners it prevents will almost certainly be under, say, 2 million. That's supposing the game sells as much as the best selling FF ever (10m) and 1/5 of those consumers base their console-buying decisions primarily on the game, which is probably being very generous.

In reality, a really good showing of a couple new titles like GoW3 will probably make more of a direct difference to sales than this does. But as you said, it's the shock and awe of the thing that can't be matched, and it'll be hard to put a dollar value on the PR this has generated. The talk of the gaming world is that MS has staged an earth-shattering coup against Sony, and something like that might change the perceptions of a few people not even interested in the game. I expect the rumours that the 360 is a dying whale, for example, to stop entirely.

FF:VII remake would do it and then some.

Realistically, nothing can top MS for shock value. I think once people get over the shock in a few days, they'll realize that MS's conference didn't bring anything new to the table gaming-wise for this year. Therefore, the best thing Sony can do is announce new games that are actually going to be released this Fall in NA. I know it's not Sony's style to release a game so quickly after the first announcement, but this would be the best move. Even if they just announce something like Jak 4 or Uncharted 2, PS fans will be able to boast that they're actually getting something new now instead of getting some game years down the road that some other console had.
